Game Story

ATLANTA (Ticker) -- Isaiah Rider provided the scoring and Dikembe Mutombo the rebounding.

Rider scored 28 points and Mutombo grabbed 23 rebounds as the Atlanta Hawks capitalized on a big second half for a 96-89 victory over the Chicago Bulls.

Coming off a hard-fought win on Tuesday against Indiana, the Bulls brought some momentum from that victory into tonight and built a nine-point halftime lead.

However, Rider scored 18 points in the second half, when the Hawks outscored the weary Bulls, 59-43. The game was still tied early in the fourth quarter before Atlanta scored eight straight points to take a 76-68 advantage with 8:07 remaining.

"We started out a little slow, a little flat," said Atlanta coach Lenny Wilkens. "We lacked energy. We had a halftime talk about it. Bimbo (Coles) started pushing it up. Jim (Jackson) and J.R. (Rider) and Dikembe were real steady for us. It's another step in the right direction. I've got to see it more often."

Mutombo, who entered the game second in the league in rebounding at 14.2 per contest, fell six boards shy of his season high set December 14 against Minnesota.

Rookie Elton Brand had 22 points and 10 rebounds and Toni Kukoc 14 and 10 for the Bulls, who failed in a bid for their second three-game winning streak of the season.

"I thought we played a fine first half, considering it's back-to-back games, and probably our worst half in 13 games in the second half," Bulls coach Tim Floyd said. "We played like we were dead-legged."

After Chris Carr drilled a 3-pointer to bring the Bulls even with 10:44 to go, Mutombo, who scored 14 points, had a tip-in and hit a 13-footer that put Atlanta ahead to stay. Rider sank a jumper and Alan Henderson a layup for a 76-68 lead with 8:07 to play.

"The beginning of the game, we let them start beating us," Mutombo said. "In the third quarter, we said we need to bury them and finish the way we wanted. We didn't look back."

Jim Jackson added 21 points and Rider made 12-of-23 shots from the field for Atlanta, which shot 45 percent (38-of-84) and held a 52-42 rebounding advantage.

"That was a good game, honestly," Rider said. "They made some runs, but we came together. Me and Jim are giving the 1-2 combo that we envisioned. We had a pretty good practice yesterday that carried over to today."

Atlanta took its biggest lead at 89-79 with just over two minutes left on two free throws from Mutombo. The Bulls tried to battle back and got as close as five points in the final minute.

Brand, who fouled out with 61 seconds remaining, scored 14 points in the opening half to help the Bulls open a 46-37 advantage. Randy Brown made a 20-footer to open the second half, giving Chicago its biggest lead.

But the Hawks responded with a 16-4 spurt, capped by a 3-pointer from Rider, who scored seven points in the stretch, to take a 53-52 with 5:59 left in the quarter. Atlanta never trailed thereafter.

"They kept fighting and they got the lead back, and we couldn't fight out," Brand said. "They stepped up their offense and we ran out of gas."

Rookie Ron Artest added 17 points for the Bulls, who shot 39.5 percent (32-of-81). Dickey Simpkins added 11 rebounds.
