Game Story

INDIANAPOLIS (Ticker) -- Jason Kidd simply ran out of time.

The superstar guard of the Phoenix Suns nearly engineered a stunning comeback but came up short as the Indiana Pacers held on for a 93-87 victory, their 14th straight home win.

Kidd collected 22 points, eight assists and seven rebounds. He singlehandedly led the Suns back from a 15-point fourth-quarter deficit, a rally that died in the final minute.

"After we fell in that big hole, we knew it was going to be an uphill battle the rest of the way," Kidd said. "We got back in it, but couldn't get over the hump, and in this league it is all about finishing."

Reggie Miller scored 21 points to lead six players in double figures for the Pacers, who are three wins shy of the longest home winning streak in franchise history. Indiana won 17 in a row at home from December 5, 1995-February 4, 1996.

"We played really well in the third quarter and early in the fourth, then they came back on us," Pacers coach Larry Bird said. "We relaxed a little bit, took some bad shots, and they were right back in it."

The Suns fell to 13-2 against the East.

The Pacers snapped a season-high three-game losing streak and improved to 7-0 at home against Western Conference teams but not without a struggle. They led by 18 points in the third quarter and 83-68 with 7:35 remaining but went without a basket for the final 5:12 and did not wrap up the win until Kidd missed a 3-pointer in the final seconds.

"You don't play the way we've played in the last few games and come away with a good feeling," Pacers forward Austin Croshere said. "We were very disappointed, not only (in) losing, but the way we played, especially in the fourth quarters."

Miller was fouled shooting a 3-pointer and his three free throws made it 83-68. But Rodney Rogers made a pair of 3-pointers -- the second off a feed from Kidd -- and added two free throws. A 3-pointer by Kidd capped an 11-0 burst and cut the deficit to 83-79 with 5:28 left.

A 3-pointer by Sam Perkins -- Indiana's last basket -- and two free throws by Jalen Rose rebuilt the lead to 88-79 before the Suns charged again with eight straight points. Penny Hardaway had a layup and jumper and Kidd sank four free throws to make it 88-87 with 1:04 left.

"We were taking bad shots on one end and they were getting out on us at the other end," Bird said.

Indiana's Mark Jackson missed a 3-pointer but Dale Davis grabbed the offensive rebound and was fouled by Hardaway with 39 seconds left. He made 1-of-2 free throws before Perkins partially blocked a jumper by Tom Gugliotta, leading to Miller's two foul shots with 22 seconds to go. Kidd missed a 3-pointer and Miller added two free throws to seal it.

"The play called for me to drive," said Gugliotta, who scored eight points. "He's so big and strong I couldn't get to the hole. I tried to back him down but couldn't and then just had to put it up. They had me off my timing and out of my rhythm."

"We were looking for Jason on the back cut, but Goog took the jumper instead," Suns coach Scott Skiles said. "That was our last option on the play, but they defended the first two well."

Rose had 15 points and nine rebounds and Davis added 11 and nine. Rik Smits scored 14 points and Perkins added 12 for the Pacers, who shot 43 percent (34-of-79) from the field and made 18-of-22 free throws. Miller was 10-of-10 from the line.

Cliff Robinson scored 24 points and Hardaway added 14 for the Suns, who shot less than 40 percent (33-of-83) and made 15-of-20 from the line.

The Pacers used a 27-9 burst across halftime to break open a tie game and take a 67-49 lead on a 3-pointer by Miller with 5:19 to go in the third quarter. Smits scored 10 points and Rose five in the run.

"They really jumped on us in the third quarter," Kidd said. "We got frustrated on offense because we were missing shots we should have made and that frustration carried over to our defense."
