Game Story

ORLANDO, Florida (Ticker) -- After imploring his teammates to turn up their defensive intensity, Boston Celtics forward Antoine Walker had to wonder if they turned up at all.

The Celtics allowed 110 points for the third straight game as Tariq Abdul-Wahad scored 11 of his 19 points in a decisive third quarter to help the Orlando Magic to their third straight victory, 111-89.

After suffering their worst loss of the season on Tuesday, a 115-89 defeat in Miami, Walker questioned his teammates' commitment to defense. Tonight, the Celtics allowed Orlando to shoot 69 percent (19-of-27) from the field in the second half.

"They really gave us problems tonight," Walker said. "We just have to work harder and other guys need to step up and we'll be OK. Hopefully our next trip to Florida will be a better one."

Abdul-Wahad made all four of his shots in the third quarter and had a pair of baskets in a pivotal 11-0 run just after halftime. John Amaechi added 16 points and Ben Wallace 12 for the Magic, who have rebounded from an eight-game skid earlier this month.

The winning streak is the longest for Orlando since a season-high five-game run from December 17-23. The Magic also have won three of their last four meetings with Boston and six of the last seven home games in the series.

"This was a nice win for us, the biggest win of the season," Orlando coach Doc Rivers said. "I think it is really difficult when you play a team like Miami and you get beat the way they did, then we start out the third quarter where we were making everything."

Amaechi scored eight points and Wallace six during the third quarter as Orlando outscored Boston, 35-17. The Magic shot 77 percent (13-of-17) in the quarter and held the Celtics to just 38 percent (6-of-16).

"Coming out in the second half we really got our defensive scheme together," Wallace said.

Walker scored 26 points and Vitaly Potapenko added 11 for Boston, which has dropped three in a row and is 4-17 away from the FleetCenter. The Celtics were without flu-ridden coach Rick Pitino and second-leading scorer Paul Pierce, who is out with a pulled left hamstring.

"We are very disappointed with our record on the road," said assistant coach Jim O'Brien, who addressed the media after the game in Rick Pitino's absence. "We have to go home and take care of business. We have to do a better job away from the FleetCenter. Until we do that it is going to come down to defense. That is no secret in the NBA."

Orlando led 50-49 early in the third quarter when Abdul-Wahad buried an 18-footer to ignite the key burst. Amaechi hit a running jumper with 8:41 left and Wallace had a three-point play 32 seconds later for a 57-49 cushion.

The Magic pushed the lead to 10 on a 21-footer by Abdul-Wahad with 7:35 remaining before Wallace capped the burst with a dunk 59 seconds later.

"This game is a game of runs and they made the big run in the third quarter and we could not recover," Celtics guard Calbert Cheaney said. "They made the big plays and we didn't."

The Celtics, who shot just 41 percent (31-of-75) from the field, trailed by as many as 24 points late in the contest.

Orlando made 12-of-20 shots in the opening quarter and led 28-20 after 12 minutes. Walker had 19 points in the opening half as the teams went to the break tied, 46-46.
