Game Story

VANCOUVER, British Columbia (Ticker) -- The venue was different but the finish was all too familiar for the New Jersey Nets.

Michael Dickerson hit a running jumper at the buzzer to give the Vancouver Grizzlies an exhilarating 108-106 victory over the hard-luck Nets, who lost on a last-second shot for the second time in as many nights.

Dickerson, who scored 29 points, came around a pick and caught the inbounds pass with three seconds remaining. He dribbled to the right baseline and pulled up over the outstretched hand of Lucious Harris to sink a high-arcing shot as time expired, setting off a wild on-court celebration.

"I think everyone thought the ball was going to Shareef Abdur-Rahim (during Vancouver's final timeout) and out of the blue, (coach Lionel Hollins) gave it to me," Dickerson said.

"I tried to cut to the basket, but Harris cut me off, so I just wanted to get the shot up," he added. "At least hit the rim so we might have a chance of putting it in. But the shot fell. It feels good, it's a great confidence builder for us."

The win was the second over the Nets this season for Vancouver, which previously had never beaten New Jersey. The Grizzlies snapped New Jersey's franchise-record nine-game home winning streak on January 7.

For the Nets, the ending was eerily reminiscent of Wednesday's loss at Seattle, which ended with a buzzer-beating 3-pointer by Chuck Person.

"We can't keep giving these games away," Nets coach Don Casey said. "Teams keep pulling rabbits out of hats. Geez, it's like Christmas."

New Jersey's Stephon Marbury netted a season-high 42 points, including a banker from behind the arc which completed a rally from an eight-point deficit in the final minutes and tied the score at 106-106.

"Marbury was a monster, he brought them back in the fourth quarter," Hollins said. "I think he accounted for 60 of their 106 points. You've got to take your hat off and give him credit for the great job he did."

"I just got into a groove," Marbury said. "It happens like that, some nights it's just your night."

Marbury, who added nine assists and made 11-of-12 foul shots, put the Nets on his talented back, scoring their last seven points to put them in position to win. He scored 23 points in the fourth quarter.

"(Dickerson) made an unbelievable shot," Marbury added. "Great shot, straight in, didn't touch nothing. He penetrated, got some space, then pulled up for the jump shot."

Keith Van Horn and Kerry Kittles, who were benched for most of the second half in the loss to Seattle, scored 19 and 17 points, respectively, for New Jersey, which lost despite shooting 51 percent (36-of-71) from the floor, including 9-of-20 from behind the arc.

"We have to stay optimistic," Kittles said. "We can't get down on ourselves. We've played some good ball but we have to go out and play better now."

Abdur-Rahim finished with 23 points. Bryant Reeves added 19 and Mike Bibby netted 11 and 11 assists for the Grizzlies, who shot 50 percent (40-of-80) and committed only 11 turnovers.

"It was our game to win, we never would have been in that position if we made our foul shots down the stretch," Reeves said. "But we made the plays that were needed and Mike made a great shot to win it."

Vancouver overcame 15 points by Kittles to take a 34-31 lead after one quarter. The Grizzlies extended the advantage to 58-45 at halftime as New Jersey made only 5-of-18 shots in the second period.

Marbury caught fire in the third quarter, scoring 11 points to cut the deficit to 78-72 entering the final period.
