Game Story

INDIANAPOLIS (Ticker) -- Reggie Miller scored 30 points as the Indiana Pacers maintained their lead in the Eastern Conference with a 94-84 victory over the slumping Miami Heat.

Miller was consistent throughout, scoring 15 points in each half and hitting 4-of-8 from behind the arc for Indiana, which leads Miami by 1 1/2 games for the best record in the conference.

"Well, it was a payback game for us -- they waxed us earlier this year," said Miller, referring to Miami's 113-101 victory on November 9. "We want to have the best record at the All-Star break."

The Pacers extended their home winning streak to 15 games, two shy of the franchise record of 17 set from December 5-February 4, 1995. Indiana improved to an NBA-best 18-2 at Conseco Fieldhouse.

"We are very comfortable here in our surroundings, but we can't get complacent and think it's an automatic win every time we play here," Miller said. "We've got to take the attitude we're behind the eight-ball and have a sense of desperation to continue to win here."

The Pacers are 18-5 when Miller leads them in scoring, compared to 10-10 when he does not and 16-2 when holding opponents below 90 points.

Alonzo Mourning had 24 points and 18 rebounds to lead the Heat, who shot 39 percent (33-of-85) and held a 52-35 rebounding edge.

Miami battled back from a 20-point deficit early in the second quarter, drawing within 79-74 on a 13-foot jumper by Jamal Mashburn with 10:13 left. But Travis Best punctuated a 9-0 run with a 3-pointer from the right sideline to give the Pacers an 88-74 advantage with 7:42 to play and the Heat never threatened again.

"We played hard tonight, we just didn't play well," Heat coach Pat Riley said. "We dug ourselves a hole in the first quarter. We're lost right now. We need to go home and learn how to play some solid, basic basketball. Our perimeter guys just aren't hitting shots or playing good defense. We must have better perimeter play."

Indiana shot 61 percent and held Miami to 29 percent in the first quarter, opening a 36-18 lead. Miller's basket to open the second quarter gave the Pacers a 38-18 advantage before Mourning and Tim Hardaway combined to score Miami's last 10 points and cut the deficit to 56-45 at halftime.

The Heat crawled within 58-54 early in the third quarter on a 3-pointer by Mashburn, but Miller made two 3-pointers of his own to spark a 10-4 spurt and give the Pacers a 68-58 edge at the 6:23 mark. Indiana took a 79-71 lead into the final period.

"The best thing was our starters did a nice job of getting the lead," Pacers coach Larry Bird said. "In the fourth quarter, we relly dominated. It was tough to score but we did a good job defensively down the stretch."

Rik Smits scored 22 points on 7-of-11 shooting for Indiana, which shot 41 percent (32-of-78) and committed a season-low six turnovers.

Jalen Rose contributed 12 points and Mark Jackson had nine and eight assists as Indiana improved to 7-0 at home against the Atlantic Division.

"We knew it would be a war and we would have to play with solid intensity," Jackson said. "We did that on both ends of the court. We must approach all our games with the same attitude."

Miami has dropped seven of its last 13 since a 20-9 start.

"We are not playing particularly well right now," Mourning said. "I can play better. The better I play, the better the team is. I'm going to keep working hard."

Mashburn scored 15 points and P.J. Brown added 12 and 11 rebounds for the Heat, who have lost four of their last six.
