Game Story

WASHINGTON (Ticker) -- Shawn Kemp lost his cool and Gar Heard lost his job.

Called for his sixth foul with 3:38 remaining, Kemp received two technical fouls and was ejected. His outburst helped the Washington Wizards complete a decisive run and hold on for a 103-98 victory in Heard's last game as coach.

After the game, the Wizards announced Heard had been fired. He was in his first season as coach and his job security was said to be in trouble when Michael Jordan became president of basketball operations earlier this month.

"I think they had their mind made up when he got here," Heard said. "I never got an opportunity to talk to him."

Assistants Butch Beard and Mike Bratz also were fired but Tree Rollins was retained. Heard was replaced by Golden State Warriors assistant Rod Higgins, whose debut will be Tuesday at Cleveland. Higgins was a teammate of Jordan's with the Chicago Bulls from 1984-86.

"It was not predestined. It was not Michael's decision alone," said Wizards general manager Wes Unseld, who announced the firing after the game. "Myself and Mr. (Abe) Pollin had input. The final say-so is frank, as far as basketball is concerned with Mike."

Kemp battled foul trouble throughout. He spent the first four minutes of the fourth quarter on the bench with four fouls and picked up his fifth with 5:44 to play.

Baskets by Rod Strickland and rookie Richard Hamilton gave the Wizards a 92-87 lead with 5:25 to go before Cleveland's Lamond Murray answered with a hoop. Washington's Tracy Murray scored with 4:31 left and Kemp fouled Juwan Howard just over a minute later.

Kemp argued with referee Joe Crawford and was ejected. Tracy Murray split the technical foul shots and Howard made both free throws to cap a 9-2 burst and give Washington a 97-89 lead.

"I'm not going to make it worse for myself and start talking about it," said Kemp, who finished with 14 points and 10 rebounds. "Everybody is disappointed with calls. You just have to deal with it. This stuff is over, and we go home."

"I didn't like the call," Cavaliers coach Randy Wittman said. "I thought for a sixth foul that Shawn was standing there and the contact was delivered into him. I don't think he initiated the contact. I thought he came over on the weak side and stood his ground. There was contact, and Joey so made the call. That was a bad call, going down the stretch."

The Cavaliers cut the deficit to 101-98 on Brevin Knight's free throw with 33 seconds to go and had a chance to tie. But Bob Sura missed a 3-pointer with nine seconds left and Strickland made two free throws to seal the win.

Strickland had 26 points and 11 assists. He made a leaning jumper off the glass to give the Wizards a 99-95 lead with 1:07 remaining and, after an ill-advised missed layup set up Sura's miss, sank the clinching free throws.

Hamilton scored 21 points for Washington (14-30), which had six players in double figures.

Knight's driving layup pulled Cleveland within 99-97 with 57 seconds left. Knight was whistled for tripping Howard at the other end with 38 seconds remaining and Howard hit both free throws.

"I made a bonehead play," Strickland said. "Don't ask me. I saw the lane open, and I got greedy. That was just dumb, dumb, dumb. That's the only way I can explain it."

Sura scored 23 points, making 4-of-5 3-pointers. He added five rebounds and five assists.

"He was very active tonight, but we lost," Wittman said. "That's the bottom line."

"They made the plays down the stretch and we just didn't get the job done when we needed to when the game was on the line," Sura said. "It's happened to us many times this year. This was just another one. I'm not even going to get into talking about those calls down the stretch. That costs too much money."

Sura gave the Cavaliers their largest lead at 61-50 with a 3-pointer with 9:41 remaining in the third quarter. Washington answered with an 11-0 run featuring four points and three assists by Strickland.

The Wizards took a 67-63 lead on a layup by Aaron Williams with 4:20 left in the period.

Sura hit a 3-pointer to give Cleveland a 71-69 lead with 2:57 remaining and the Cavs took a 77-75 lead into the final period.

Reserve point guard Whitney scored seven of Washington's first 11 points of the fourth quarter and Strickland returned to give the Wizards an 88-85 lead on a short jumper with 7:28 to play.
