Game Story

CHICAGO (Ticker) -- Shooting 59 percent and playing the Chicago Bulls are two good remedies for a five-game road losing streak.

Vince Carter scored 22 points and Kevin Willis added 21 off the bench as the Toronto Raptors used a quick third-quarter run and coasted to a 106-89 victory over the Bulls.

Carter, the leading vote-getter in the Eastern Conference for the All-Star Game, made 7-of-13 shots and Willis hit 8-of-9 as the Raptors won on the road for the first time since a 109-104 triumph over the Dallas Mavericks on December 30.

"I did not change anything in the second half," Carter said. "We were winning and that is all that matters to me. I cannot win the game myself. I'm just playing for the team, not to impress anybody."

Tracy McGrady had 18 points and seven assists and Dell Curry scored 11 of his 17 points in Toronto's 16-2 run over just 2:36. Doug Christie handed out nine assists for the Raptors, who remained one half game behind Charlotte for second place in the Central Divison.

"I think it all goes back to when we have all our guys in back-to-back games, we play well," said Toronto coach Butch Carter. "We learn how to play certain guys in certain units, and then pieces are missing and that hurts us.

"Kevin Willis is a low-post player and he gets rebounds ... Muggsy Bogues makes us able to push the ball. Being able to add a shooter in Dell Curry, and a wise older player, helps."

Overall, Curry made 7-of-8 shots, including 3-of-4 from 3-point range. His 3-pointer capped the run and gave the Raptors a 65-46 advantage with 7:29 left in the third quarter.

Bogues left the game in the third quarter with a shoulder injury and did not return.

Rookie Ron Artest scored 18 points and top overall pick Elton Brand added 16 and nine rebounds for Chicago, which lost its third straight game. Toni Kukoc contributed 13 points and Corey Benjamin added 11, making 5-of-7 shots in 11 minutes off the bench.

"They got the ball to Carter in the third quarter and they exploded from there," Artest said. "I thought I was a bit sluggish, but you have to give credit to their big men. They were trapping and their team came down fast and hard and got me out of my rhythm."

Antonio Davis and Willis each scored 10 points in the first half for Toronto, which had a 46-38 lead at the start of the third quarter.

"Willis made a big difference in our play tonight, but we still should have niot given up as much in the post as we did," said Chicago coach Tim Floyd. "We had a turnover on our very first pass of the game and that really set the tone for the rest of the night. Offensively they took away a lot of what we were trying to do and didn't allow us to get in a lot of cheap baskets in the paint."

Chicago closed within 49-43 when Artest hit a 3-pointer with 10:39 left in the period. But Carter answered with a dunk 38 seconds later to ignite the 16-2 run.

The Raptors made 12-of-20 shots in the period and outscored the Bulls, 36-24. Toronto did not allow Chicago closer than 13 points in the fourth quarter and built the lead as high as 105-81 on a free throw by Willis with 3:26 left.

Kukoc and Brand each scored six points in the first quarter as the Bulls grabbed a 21-20 edge. The Raptors went ahead for good, 26-25, on a layup by Willis with 8:31 left in the second period.
