Game Story

DALLAS (Ticker) -- Cedric Ceballos had 31 points and 10 rebounds as the Dallas Mavericks extended their season-best winning streak to four games with a 107-96 triumph over the Denver Nuggets.

Ceballos made 11-of-19 shots from the field and 6-of-6 free throws and Dallas won for the seventh time in nine games and avenged a 98-96 loss at Denver on January 4.

"It was just an opportunitty for us to just push the basketball," Ceballos said. "We were a little disappointed in (the loss in) Denver. We really just want to win badly and understand the importance of (winning against) the teams that are right next to us. It's kind of like a 2-for-1 win. It's one in the loss column for them, it's a win for us. We really wanted to get this one so we could move up a slot."

Erick Strickland scored 15 points and Steve Nash added 12 off the bench for the Mavericks, who shot 49 percent (41-of-84). The guards compensated for a rare poor game by swingman Michael Finley, who is 14th in the NBA at 22.7 points per game but was held to eight points.

Bryant Stith scored a season-high 27 points off the bench and rookie James Posey added 15 for Denver, which has lost its last five visits to Dallas.

"We weren't ready to play and that was obvious," said Denver coach Dan Issel. "We didn't guard anybody and we took jump shots rather than take the ball to the basket. We just weren't ready to play. They get paid to play 82 games and they have to play 82 games. There may be some days that aren't ideal situations, but you have to come out and put yourself through it."

The Mavericks took control from the outset, taking an 18-4 lead on a layup by Ceballos with 5:36 left in the opening quarter. Ceballos had 13 points and seven boards in the first period, when Dallas opened a 28-10 lead. The Nuggets made just 5-of-23 shots in the first.

"I was very pleased by the way the team came out," said Dallas coach Don Nelson. "They came out the right way jumped all over them and stayed that way for a long time. The score was a little closer than the game was."

Stith provided a spark in the second, scoring eight points. His 15-footer drew the Nuggets within 30-18 with 9 1/2 minutes left. But Strickland answered with an eight-footer to trigger a 21-3 burst. Ceballos had 10 points in the run that Sean Rooks capped with a three-point play for a 50-21 bulge with 4:07 left.

Dallas did not let up in the third period, hitting 13-of-23 shots to maintain an 87-61 cushion. The Mavs matched their biggest lead of the game when Nash hit a 3-pointer to make it 96-67 with 7:28 to go.

With the starters resting for both teams, the Nuggets went on a 27-4 run to close within 100-94 with 49 seconds left. But Damon Jones hit a free throw nine second later and Rooks followed with a pair to make it 103-94 with 30 seconds to go.

"I felt very comfortable even though they cut it to six points," Nelson said. "I was a little disappointed with a couple of players at the end of the game. But that's garbage time and strange things happen in garbage time."
