Game Story

ORLANDO, Florida (Ticker) -- Chris Gatling came off the bench to score 11 of his 19 points in a huge second quarter as the Orlando Magic pulled away for a 103-87 victory over the Atlanta Hawks.

Rookie Corey Maggette added 18 points and seven rebounds in 22 minutes for Orlando, which shot 76 percent (16-of-21) from the floor and outscored Atlanta 42-23 in the second period. The Magic were seven points short of their record for a quarter, set at Milwaukee on February 20, 1995.

"Corey Magette, I think it was the franchise record, we assumed, we counted, he had 42 points in shootaround this morning," said Orlando coach Doc Rivers. "You add this with the 18 he had tonight, he had one terrific game. He was on fire today in shootaround. It usually doesn't carry over, but tonight it did."

Darrell Armstrong scored 12 of his 16 points in the first period for Orlando, which has won three of its last four games.

The Magic shot just 29 percent (6-of-21) in the first quarter and battled to a 16-16 tie. Starters Ben Wallace, John Amaechi and Tariq Abdul-Wahad were scoreless in the period, shooting a combined 0-for-8 as they were bothered by Hawks 7-2 center Dikembe Mutombo.

"Our second unit played really well, really gave us a big lift," Armstrong said. "We struggled the first five minutes, just putting the ball in the basket, along with Mutombo, he was making shots tough. We just kept going at him and that's what I liked about it."

Jim Jackson had 15 points and eight rebounds for Atlanta, which had a three-game winning streak stopped. Alan Henderson and Bimbo Coles each added 12 points for the Hawks, who were held to 36 percent (29-of-80) from the field.

"We just didn't play tonight," Jackson said. "When you go on the road and you don't play hard than you're not going to win. We didn't shoot the ball well tonight and we gave up a lot defensively. They got way too many second shots, scored a lot of easy buckets in transition and killed us on backdoor cuts to the hoop."

Atlanta leading scorer Isaiah Rider was limited to nine points on 4-of-18 shooting. Mutombo led the Hawks with 12 rebounds.

"You have to be a little smarter and not rely on the outside shot," Atlanta coach Lenny Wilkens said. "You have to go inside because you know they are going to double. You have to have spacing and move. We were brain-dead and did not do any of those things."

Orlando's bench outscored Atlanta's substitutes, 70-29. Monty Williams, who did not play in the first period, scored 13 points.

"I think our energy level is back to where we had it," Williams said. "I think what helps us now is we know that if we don't play hard, we're going to lose and that's tough. Because some teams, if they don't play hard, they can win on talent, but we can't do that. I think if we bring that energy every night, we're going to win games."

Michael Doleac made a hook shot to give the Magic the lead for good, 20-18, with 10:38 left in the second period. Williams followed with a layup, Doleac hit a 12-footer and Gatling dunked for a 26-18 advanatge with 8:55 remaining.

Orlando scored seven straight points and pushed the bulge to 40-23 on a 14-footer by Chucky Atkins with 4:41 left in the first half. Atkins scored eight of his nine points in the second quarter.

Abdul-Wahad made three straight baskets in the third quarter, with his layup giving the Magic their biggest lead 70-47 with 7:39 to go. Abdul-Wahad scored all of his eight points in the third period.
