Game Story

MIAMI (Ticker) -- No Grant Hill, no chance for the slumping Detroit Pistons.

Playing without their leading scorer, the Pistons fell behind in the second quarter and were not competitive thereafter as they suffered their seventh loss in eight games, 104-82 to the Miami Heat.

Hill, who returned from a five-game absence on Saturday and scored 12 points to help the Pistons topple Philadelphia, 90-88, was unable to dress for tonight's contest due to a hip contusion.

"Whenever you go up against a team like Miami without a loaded gun, you're going to lose," Detroit guard Michael Curry said.

Jerry Stackhouse appeared primed to pick up the scoring slack, collecting 10 first-quarter points to spark Detroit to a 28-22 lead. But Miami took control over the next 12 minutes.

Jamal Mashburn scored 23 points and Alonzo Mourning added 20 for the Heat, who outscored the Pistons, 32-13, in the second period to take a 54-41 halftime advantage. Voshon Lenard, who has been starting in place of injured shooting guard Dan Majerle, contributed six points during a 15-4 spurt to close the second quarter.

Lenard finished with 18 points and Clarence Weatherspoon added 10 off the bench for Miami, which had lost three of its previous four games. The Heat pulled within one game of Indiana (28-15) for the top record in the Eastern Conference.

"When you're having fun, you're winning," Lenard said. "We have to find out how we used to be. Right now, we are having fun. We need to try and get on a roll."

Mourning, who set a team record with his 10th straight 20-point game, was 9-of-13 from the field and Mashburn drained 10-of-14 shots for the Heat, who shot a blistering 56 percent (45-of-81).

"Tonight we shot the ball well, which was a complete reversal from our play on our (0-2) road trip," Miami coach Pat Riley said. "We better make our shots because we are not driving with the ball and getting to the free-throw line. Tonight we caught the Pistons undermanned without Grant Hill and we did what we had to do to win."

"We need to keep on these peaks," Mourning added. "We need to get a level of consistency. I am waiting for a seven- to 10-game winning streak. We have all the tools to accomplish what we need. It's just going to take going out every night and giving it our maximum effort."

Stackhouse led five Pistons in double figures with 17 points. Detroit (21-21) slipped back to .500 and suffered its sixth straight road loss.

"We were our own worst enemy," Stackhouse said. "We were moving the ball and getting some open 3s, then we got none of that the rest of the way. It was kind of a free-for-all. We never really put any pressure on them or got close. This was an easy win for them."

Christian Laettner scored 15 points and John Crotty had 12 for the Pistons, who shot 37 percent (28-of-75) and yielded 22 points off turnovers.

"When we play the right way and pass the basketball, we are pretty good," Detroit coach Alvin Gentry said. "When we don't, we are not very good. We have to play for a full 48 minutes."

Lindsey Hunter and Curry scored 11 and 10 points, respectively, for Detroit, which followed its poor second-quarter performance by getting outscored, 26-17, in the third.

"Whenever you come out of a half and you're down 13 or 14 points, it's an uphill battle," Curry said. "It's tough without Grant and with Jerry in foul trouble. We lose our two offensive weapons."

Rookie Anthony Carter's layup with 8:59 remaining in the first half forged a 33-33 tie, sparking an 8-0 run that Weatherspoon capped with a six-foot hook shot in the lane to give Miami a 39-33 lead.

Laettner answered with a short jumper and Crotty made two free throws to shave the deficit to two. But Lenard made a layup, a 20-footer and two free throws as Miami exploded for 15 of the next 19 points, opening a 54-41 cushion at intermission.
