Game Story

BOSTON (Ticker) -- Alonzo Mourning sank an eight-foot jump hook in the lane with 16 seconds remaining as the Miami Heat survived a furious fourth-quarter rally by the Boston Celtics, pulling out a dramatic 105-103 victory.

Mourning and Jamal Mashburn scored 23 points apiece but the two were held to five points in the fourth period before combining to put away the Celtics on Miami's final possession.

Mashburn drove down the right side, drawing double coverage, then found Mourning in the lane for the game-winner. Miami won the season series from Boston, 3-1, after being swept three games by the Celtics in the lockout-shortened campaign.

"It just makes you feel good that you are chosen for that," Mourning said. "Mash drove and drove two, three people with him, and we have a rule that when you penetrate, you move it to an open spot. That's what happened and we'll take the win."

"We had been trying to get the ball to Zo," Miami coach Pat Riley said. "I just wanted to get it down the side. We got lucky. We played hard enough to win."

Antoine Walker scored 35 points and Paul Pierce added 27, but both missed golden opportunities to give the Celtics a chance to win in the closing moments.

Pierce capped Boston's comeback from a 10-point fourth-quarter deficit by drilling a 3-pointer to forge a 101-101 tie with 1:28 to play. But the second-year forward missed badly on a 19-footer from the left sideline with 3.9 seconds left.

"We had a lot of mistakes, defensively and offensively, but most of all we took quick shots," Pierce said. "The execution down the stretch just wasn't there."

The rebound wound up in the hands of Celtics rookie Adrian Griffin, who quickly found Walker alone in the left corner. But Walker's desperation heave as time expired clanged off the rim, ending Boston's four-game home-winning streak.

"I got a good look at it but it just came short," Walker said. "That would've been a great game with a great finish.

"I liked Walker's final shot," Boston coach Rick Pitino said. "Good rebound, he stepped back, wide open, to win the game. I like that shot because we didn't have too much (stamina) left. If it goes into OT, we're physically pretty beat up."

Tim Hardaway scored 17 points and Voshon Lenard added 14 for Miami, which extended its lead over second-place New York to 1 1/2 games in the Atlantic Division.

"We've all been together for a while," Mourning said. "We expect bigger things. We won't settle with just the division or the conference. We need to get beyond the first round this year and games like tonight prepare us for that."

The Heat appeared to take control early in the second half. Lenard made two free throws and a 19-footer to cap a 9-0 run to start that opened the third quarter and gave Miami a 70-59 lead.

Boston trailed by as many as 16 points before coming alive in the final 12 minutes. Dana Barros and Walker made back-to-back 3-pointers and Walker hit a free throw before his driving layup cut the deficit to 94-92 with 7:12 to play.

Walker had a chance to tie the game with 5:33 remaining but missed a pair of free throws. A 71 percent foul shooter, Walker went an uncharacteristic 9-of-16 from the line.

"The one thing you have to understand, people getting on Antoine missing free throws, he played 47 minutes tonight after playing his (butt) off last night," Pitino said. "The difference between these two teams tonight was Miami had the veteran players that didn't take bad shots down the stretch."

"Walker missing seven free throws?" Riley added. "We were very fortunate to win, but dammit, we're gonna take it."

After Walker's misses, Mashburn took charge and appeared to knock the wind out of the Celtics by hitting a pair of free throws a 23-footer that extended the advantage to 99-92 with 4:23 left.

But Pitino called timeout and Kenny Anderson responded with a driving layup and an 11-footer to cut the deficit to three with 3:12 left.

Lenard made a layup before Pierce made two from the line and sank a 24-footer to knot the contest at 101-101 with 88 seconds remaining.

Clarence Weatherspoon hit a 14-footer to put Miami back in front with 1:07 to go, but Anderson answered on Boston's next possession calmly draining a 16-footer with 38 seconds left to set up the wild finish.

Anderson had 18 points and six assists for the Celtics, who shot 41 percent (36-of-87) and yielded 19 points off turnovers. Boston slipped to 16-7 at the FleetCenter.

The Heat shot 48 percent (36-of-75) and held a 44-40 advantage on the boards, improving to 13-10 on the road and 10-2 against Atlantic Division opponents.
