Game Story

DENVER (Ticker) -- The Denver Nuggets were relentless, setting season highs in points and assists as coach Dan Issel watched all 10 players on his newly revamped roster enter the scoring column in a 135-112 rout of the Milwaukee Bucks.

The Nuggets had a season-high 45 points in the first quarter, 72 at the half and 100 entering the final period before easily eclipsing their 128-point performance against the Los Angeles Clippers here on December 28.

"This reminds me of an ABA game," Issel, a former member of the defunct league, said during a halftime interview.

Nick Van Exel had 28 points and Antonio McDyess added 26 and 10 rebounds for the Nuggets, who buried 12-of-24 3-pointers. Van Exel was 6-of-9 from long range and handed out 11 of the Nuggets' 41 assists.

"The key to our offense tonight was we pushed the basketball," Issel said. "We thought we had some mismatches and we looked for them early in the game. But the bottom line is we played unselfishly, 41 assists is an awful lot. We looked for each other tonight."

Bryant Stith scored 17 points, Raef LaFrentz 16 and George McCloud added 13 off the bench for Denver, which has won four of five since a season-high six-game losing streak and improved to 18-8 at the Pepsi Center.

Tariq Abdul-Wahad and Chris Gatling both made their debuts for Denver after Tuesday's five-player deal that sent Chauncey Billups, Ron Mercer and Johnny Taylor to Orlando. Gatling had nine points and Abdul-Wahad seven as the Nuggets posted their eighth win in nine home meetings with the Bucks.

"First of all I appreciate them playing," Issel said of his two newest players. "Tariq got here about 1:00 p.m. and Chris didn't walk in the locker room until 6:00. We taught them three plays and they played well. Chris gives us low post play and Tariq gives us defense."

"It was weird not seeing Ron on the court and seeing Chauncey cheering us on on the bench," McDyess added. "I was surprised to see Tariq and Gatling playing tonight. This is the most fun I've had since I've been here. It was a totally different atmosphere. This is the most complete game we've had all season."

Ray Allen scored 22 points, Sam Cassell 21 and Glenn Robinson 19 for Milwaukee, which had won three of four. Ironically, the Bucks have the NBA season-high point total with a 137-87 rout of Charlotte on January 10. They never led tonight.

"Bryant Stith played a great game and they didn't even need it," Bucks coach George Karl said. "McDyess and Van Exel kicked our All-Stars. They should be on the All-Star team. Van Exel is a great player. He's beat me many a night. I've always thought he was one of the best point guards in the league and I like playing against him."

"We had a lot of ball movement and assists tonight," Van Exel added. "We really played from start to finish. I love to play against (Karl). He makes my blood rush."

Denver's points were its most since scoring 137 in a triple-overtime game at Phoenix on November 15, 1995. The Nuggets had not scored this many points in a regulation contest since putting up 137 against Dallas on April 21, 1993.

The Nuggets shot a season-best 63 percent (53-of-84) for their best shooting performance since making 66 percent from the floor against Boston in February 1987.

James Posey made an 18-footer, LaFrentz was good from 17 feet, McDyess sank a 14-footer before Stith, making his first start of the season, drilled a 23-footer to cap a game-opening 9-0 run.

The Bucks, who have scored at least 100 points 27 times this season, appeared fit to keep pace with the Nuggets, closing within 23-16 on Cassell's jumper with 6:46 left in the first quarter.

But LaFrentz framed a jumper by Van Exel with a layup and slam to stretch the lead to 13 and Denver opened a 45-31 bulge entering the second quarter. The Nuggets last scored 45 points in a quarter on November 4, 1994 against Minnesota.

"Denver was hot and after the first quarter I knew it was going to be a long night," Robinson said. "It probably would have been better for us if they had Ron Mercer. McDyess and Van Exel wouldn't have gotten as many touches.

"The first quarter was the difference," he added. "We cut the lead to seven or eight, but just couldn't get over the hump."

Milwaukee actually outscored Denver, 31-27, in the second quarter as the Nuggets matched their season-high first-half total of 72 points established against Sacramento on December 16.

The Bucks remained within striking distance and pulled within 100-92 with 11:09 to play after Vinny Del Negro capped a 6-0 burst with a layup.

But Adbul-Wahad showed his new teammates that he did not want to be left out of the offensive showcase, answering Milwaukee's bid for a comeback with a dunk and two free throws. Gatling also got into the act in the final period, drilling a 3-pointer with 38 seconds to play that gave Denver a 24-point bulge.

"I wanted to play tonight," Gatling said. "I like this team. I like the guys on this team. I just wanted to suit up and contribute. We played real hard tonight and I enjoyed the energetic crowd."
