Game Story

DALLAS (Ticker) -- On a day where the Dallas Mavericks parted with one troubled player and added another, the Charlotte Hornets were troubled by Michael Finley.

Finley scored 32 points, including 14 in the fourth quarter, and Erick Strickland added a season-high 23 as Dallas prevailed, 106-96, for its fifth win in six games.

The Mavericks led 81-75 after three quarters, but Finley scored seven straight points in a 9-0 run to open the fourth quarter. Strickland, who was 10-of-18 from outside, gave Dallas a 90-75 advantage on a running jumper with 9:54 left.

Finley, who made 11-of-18 shots, gave Dallas its largest lead at 102-83 on two free throws with 6:04 to play. An 11-2 run by Charlotte provided the final margin.

"For us to win this game, we had to shoot the ball and get in the open court," Dallas coach Don Nelson said. "We did those two things. We tried to throw them off balance, changing defenses and pressing them and trapping them a little bit. I think everything was pretty successsful, but I think the main thing was we made shots."

Dallas shot a season-high 53 percent (40-of-75) from the field and sank 23-of-29 free throws in snapping a three-game losing streak to Charlotte.

The Mavericks made news off the court today as they signed outlandish forward Dennis Rodman to a one-year contract and reached an agreement with the NBA Players Association to part ways with problematic rookie forward Leon Smith, making the teenager a free agent.

Rodman, a seven-time rebounding champion, was not on hand as his new team was outrebounded, 46-43. It is not known when he will make his debut with the Mavericks.

"I'm glad he signed," Nelson said. "We just need him to come in now and get in shape. We'll see what happens."

Eddie Jones scored 21 points and Derrick Coleman contributed 19 for Charlotte, which shot 37 percent (30-of-81) en route to its 11th road loss in 12 games.

"We're feeling pretty good about ourselves at home," Jones said. "When we go on the road, we think we are going to continue it. We just fall apart. I'm not alarmed. We can always turn things around. This is our 23rd road game, so we have 18 left. We can't let people think they can beat us when we come in."

Dallas trailed 23-21 after one quarter, but Strickland scored four points in an 8-0 run as the Mavericks grabbed a 43-35 advantage with 5:35 remaining in the second period. Cedric Ceballos gave Dallas its largest lead of the first half at 49-39 as he completed a three-point play with 2:52 to go.

Steve Nash scored 10 points off the bench and Strickland added seven in the second quarter as the Mavericks shot 71 percent (12-of-17) from the field to take a 57-50 lead.

"I thought we did a great job on the big people, but the guards just penetrated too much," Charlotte coach Paul Silas said. "We really couldn't keep them at bay. We couldn't score and they were breaking us down by scoring. It was a tough game. We knew it was going to be tough."

Dirk Nowitzki scored 12 of his 14 points in the third quarter and helped Dallas build a 65-54 advantage with 8:12 to play in the period.

David Wesley, who next week will face misdemeanor charges following the automobile death of teammate Bobby Phills on January 12, sank a 3-pointer with 35 seconds to play to cut the deficit to 77-73.

Finley's layup with two-tenths of a second left gave Dallas an 81-75 lead entering the fourth quarter.
