Game Story

OAKLAND, California (Ticker) -- Antawn Jamison scored 19 points, including the last six of the game, as the Golden State Warriors rallied for their ninth straight home victory over the Denver Nuggets, 103-101.

Nick Van Exel drilled a 3-pointer with 2:53 left to give the Nuggets a 101-95 lead before the Warriors finished with an 8-0 run. Jason Caffey made a layup with 2:35 to go and Jamison tipped in his own miss on the next possession to move Golden State within 101-99.

Jamison hit a short fadeaway jumper with 1:14 to play and the Warriors took the lead 21 seconds later on his layup off a feed from rookie Vonteego Cummings.

Golden State's Donyell Marshall blocked Raef LaFrentz's shot in the lane with 35 seconds remaining before Marshall missed a long jumper, giving Denver two chances in the final 10 seconds.

George McCloud's 3-pointer went in and out and Bryant Stith's tip bounced off the rim at the buzzer. The Nuggets have not won here since April 22, 1995.

"It shows the character of this team," Jamison said. "Another team would have folded and given up but we were focused and really believed we could have won the game. We continued to fight and find a way to win."

"You could feel the difference," Warriors coach Garry St. Jean said. "There's chemistry. Those guys are playing hard together. It's fun to be with them because they're giving all they've got and that's where it's at."

Antonio McDyess scored 30 points and LaFrentz and Van Exel added 12 apiece for Denver, which lost for the 12th time in 13 trips to Oakland and has not won in eight road games overall since December 11. In their last 100 road games, the Nuggets are 9-91.

"They really stepped up their game in the last three minutes," McDyess said. "We had some good looks at the basket and we didn't convert on them."

"We didn't score the last three minutes of the game and we just didn't do a good job of executing," Nuggets coach Dan Issel said. "You don't score the last three minutes in a close game, you aren't going to win."

Caffey scored 17 points and Cummings added 16 for Golden State, which has won four in a row for the first time since February 14-19 of last season. It has been victorious in six of its last eight games and four of five home contests.

Jamison was 8-of-18 from the floor for Golden State, which shot 51 percent (41-of-80) in its final home contest before hosting the All-Star Game on February 13. Marshall grabbed 12 rebounds, Jamison 10 and Erick Dampier seven as the Warriors gained a 49-39 advantage.

"Being able to have enough guys going in there and practice and have successful practices makes such a big difference," Marshall said. "We have guys coming in who are healthy now and we're starting to play like a team."

McDyess made 11-of-20 shots for the Nuggets, who shot 44 percent (39-of-89). He also grabbed 11 rebounds and McCloud had nine.

Denver used a 13-1 run to open a 44-41 lead with 2:30 left in the first half as LaFrentz scored five points. McDyess finished the half with 20 points as the Nuggets led, 50-47.

McDyess was held to just four points in the third quarter as Golden State took a 74-73 lead into the final period.
