Game Story

AUBURN HILLS, Michigan (Ticker) -- After being sent home from this afternoon's shootaround with the flu, Jerry Stackhouse returned and teamed with Lindsey Hunter to make the Cleveland Cavaliers feel miserable.

Hunter scored 26 points and Stackhouse added 22 as the Detroit Pistons won for the first time without injured All-Star Grant Hill, defeating the Cavaliers, 105-96.

Hunter added a season-high 10 assists and five rebounds and Stackhouse, who could not find his shooting touch in the first quarter, contributed eight boards as Detroit won for only the second time in 10 games and improved to 1-4 without Hill, who has been sidelined with a bruised hip.

"I just wanted to be aggressive because Grant wasn't going to play and I knew Stack wasn't feeling well this morning," Hunter said. "I told the guys I was going to go right at them on both ends of the floor."

The Pistons shot 42 percent (34-of-80) from the field, including 9-of-28 from 3-point range.

Stackhouse shot 1-for-8 in the first quarter before finishing 6-of-18 from the field. He had averaged 29.6 points in the first four games Hill missed.

"My stomach was bothering me all day," Stackhouse said. "I don't know if it was the flu or the stomach virus. The worst I felt all day was when I was 1-for-8 in the first quarter."

Shawn Kemp scored 19 points and Lamond Murray added 18 for Cleveland, which dropped its seventh straight road game and lost for the second time in five games overall.

The Cavaliers were without guard Bob Sura, the team's second-leading scorer at 15.5 points per game. Sura has a sprained right big toe.

Detroit led 46-44 at the half and opened the third quarter on a 14-2 run. Jud Buechler sank a 3-pointer, his only points of the game, and Terry Mills scored six of his 19 on back-to-back 3-pointers. After Stackhouse completed a three-point play, Mills made a 21-footer as Detroit built a 60-46 advantage with 8:25 remaining.

"We came out at halftime without the intensity we had in the first half," Cleveland coach Randy Wittman said. "The game turned in a matter of three minutes."

Hunter gave the Pistons their largest lead at 68-53 on two free throws with 6:21 to play. Christian Laettner, who had 15 points and 10 rebounds, and Mills scored eight points each in the third quarter as Detroit outscored Cleveland, 32-22, to grab a 78-66 lead.

"We were able to get something going in the third," Stackhouse said. "That's really important for this team, getting some breathing room."

Cleveland rookie Andre Miller scored five of his 18 points in a 9-2 fourth-quarter run as Detroit's lead was cut to 82-79 with 8:06 to play. Stackhouse answered with a layup and Mills sank two free throws with 5:54 remaining.

Michael Curry, who scored all 12 of his points in the second half, made three consecutive baskets in a 76-second span to maintain Detroit's nine-point lead with 2:06 left. The Cavs got no closer than six thereafter.

"This was a much-needed win for us," Detroit coach Alvin Gentry said. "They made a run at us and I was proud of the way we maintained our poise and won the game. It would have been really easy to fold, but we got a win we desperately needed."

Detroit outrebounded Cleveland, 46-36, and sank 28-of-34 free throws, with Stackhouse making 10-of-12 and Laettner 9-of-10.

The Pistons led 20-18 after one quarter, but Cleveland grabbed a 31-24 lead on a basket by Wesley Person with 7:46 to go. Hunter responded by scoring 12 points in a 14-2 run, including a four-point play and a 3-pointer to cap the run with 4:55 left.

"It was a winnable game," Kemp said. "We have to stick with what's working. We had good stuff going down low in the first half. When you're moving the ball and playing well in the first half, you have to stick to it and play well in the second half. We have nobody to blame but ourselves."

Hunter had 19 points in the first half and Stackhouse added 11 as Detroit took a 46-44 lead at the intermission.
