Game Story

MIAMI (Ticker) -- As they have since moving into the American Airlines Arena, the Miami Heat struggled against an inferior foe. However, Alonzo Mourning would not let them lose this one.

Mourning scored 32 points as the Heat rallied from a 17-point third-quarter deficit for a 99-92 victory over the Washington Wizards, who have lost 10 straight road games.

"We shouldn't be spotting a team 15-17 points and have to fight to come back," Mourning said. "It makes it that much harder. We've just got to establish a little consistency, that's all. If we can do that, then we'll be a team to reckon with."

"We got over the hump whereas most of the time, we have not," Heat guard Tim Hardaway said. "We played defense and stayed the course, and ground it out until we got the win."

Since moving into the new facility just over a month ago, the Heat have had trouble getting acclimated, losing home games to Vancouver, New Jersey and Chicago. Tonight looked like more of the same as Miami trailed 59-42 in the first minute of the third quarter.

Mourning powered a surge with nine points over the next six-plus minutes as the Heat closed the gap to four with 4:29 left in the period. The All-Star center made 9-of-13 shots and a remarkable 14-of-14 free throws as he scored at least 20 points for the 12th straight game, the longest current streak of any player.

"I don't want to talk about my free-throw shooting," Mourning said. "Don't jinx me. It's flowing right now, thank God."

Miami caught and passed Washington at 85-84 with 7:55 remaining with 3-pointers on consecutive possessions by Hardaway, who had 17 points and seven assists.

"We turned it around in the second half, but it was hard," Hardaway said. "They are a talented team. We got good open shots in the second half that we were not making in the first half."

The Heat turned to their trademark defense and held the Wizards to two points over the final 3 1/2 minutes. They have won three in a row for the first time since the new building became home.

Jamal Mashburn scored 24 points for the Heat, who have won six straight meetings with Washington.

Mitch Richmond scored 21 points and Rod Strickland added 20, eight rebounds and eight assists for the Wizards, who fell to 1-2 under interim coach Darrell Walker and have not won a road game since December 21 at Detroit.

"After the third quarter, I told our guys that the game wasn't over," Walker said. "I knew we had to come out with a lot of aggression to meet their aggression. When they became more physical, we needed to step up and meet their challenge."

Richmond became the 33rd NBA player to eclipse 19,000 points, pushing his total to 19,016.

A basket by Washington's Juwan Howard tied the game for the last time at 90-90 with 3:35 remaining. Mourning answered with two free throws 44 seconds later and Clarence Weatherspoon made 1-of-2 from the line with 2:24 to go, giving Miami a 93-90 lead.

After a miss by Howard, Miami's Voshon Lenard sealed the win with a 3-pointer with 1:04 remaining.

Lenard scored 10 points for the Heat, who shot 42 percent (32-of-76) from the field and made 30-of-35 foul shots.

Howard scored 16 points and former Heat Isaac Austin added 14 and 10 rebounds for the Wizards, who shot 43 percent (39-of-91) but attempted just 10 free throws, making nine. Washington held a 46-45 rebounding edge.

"That's the way it's going to be for a while, until we get a little respect," Walker said of the discrepancy in free throws. "This is a (Miami) team that's been winning for a while and we haven't."

Strickland scored 15 points and Richmond added 13 in the first half as the Wizards opened a 57-42 lead. Mashburn scored 17 points but the rest of the Heat struggled.

"We were up 23-16 with three minutes to go in the first quarter when they scrambled the game," Heat coach Pat Riley said. "They started showing us a soft trap, and then a hard trap, and we had a 13-minute stretch of playing random basketball. We failed to recognize what they were doing. We went 1-on-1 and turned the ball over instead of attacking their defense. We were very fortunate to cut the lead in the second half and come back to win."

Howard's hook opened the third quarter and gave Washington its largest lead before Miami stormed back behind Mourning.
