Game Story

VANCOUVER, British Columbia (Ticker) -- Michael Dickerson led a balanced attack with 20 points as the Vancouver Grizzlies rolled to their first win over the Chicago Bulls, 101-76, the largest victory margin in franchise history.

Vancouver had lost the first seven meetings between the teams since enetering the NBA in 1995. The first six came when the Bulls were the premier team in the league, led by incomparable superstar Michael Jordan. The rebuilt Bulls eked out an 88-87 win at the United Center last season.

The 25-point margin eclipsed the Grizzlies' previous high set against the Los Angeles Clippers on November 14. The Grizzlies never trailed for the first time in 205 games.

"We did a good job tonight," Dickerson said. "We played together. If we get an effort like we did tonight we can compete with anyone."

The Grizzlies took control from the opening tap, streaking to a 17-4 lead just four minutes into the contest. Mike Bibby, who scored seven points during the run, expanded the lead to 34-14 with a bucket at the 3:03 mark. Vancouver led 37-20 at the end of the quarter.

"We came out and just took it to them," Bibby said. "It was fun -- it was a lot of minutes for everybody. We (the starters) got a rest at the end."

Chicago trimmed the deficit to 66-56 on a basket by rookie Elton Brand with 7:20 left in the third quarter but was held without a basket for the remainder of the period as Vancouver closed with a 20-5 run to take a commanding 86-61 advantage.

The lead grew to 101-65 on a tip-in by Felipe Lopez with 2:50 left. The Bulls scored the last 11 points to account for the games final margin.

"I thought the Bulls' lineup hurt them," said Grizzlies coach Lionel Hollins, referring to Chicago's decision to go small and start Toni Kukoc at center in place of Will Perdue and move rookie Ron Artest from guard to forward.

"In the third quarter our defense was outstanding," Hollins added. "We maintained our poise and intensity. We're still in the process of learning to be the team we can be."

Bibby finished with 16 points and seven assists and Othella Harrington added 12 points for Vancouver, which shot 48 percent (39-of-81) from the floor, hit 18-of-22 free throws and held a 46-34 rebounding edge.

Shareef Abdur-Rahim only took six shots and finished with 12 points along with eight rebounds as the Grizzlies won for only the second time in 11 home games.

Toni Kukoc scored 27 points and Brand added 22 but received no support from their teammates as they accounted for 64 percent of the Chicago's points. No other Bull reached double figures.

"We didn't start the game well," Kukoc said. "Vancouver was able to run. The team is very young and we just couldn't keep up with their transition game."

"It started with defensive transition and a lack of shot-making," Bulls coach Tim Floyd said. "They're a team of terrific athletes with Abdur-Rahim and Dickerson. As a result, they put a lot of pressure on us tonight. "I didn't see this coming. We were great against Seattle and we had a great practice yesterday."

Chicago, which failed to surpass 90 points for the sixth time in seven outings, shot 40 percent (28-of-70) and surrendered 23 points off 20 turnovers.
