Game Story

WASHINGTON (Ticker) -- The Charlotte Hornets found a remedy for their road woes -- a dose of the hapless Washington Wizards.

Elden Campbell scored a season-high 27 points and Derrick Coleman, Eddie Jones and David Wesley added 20 apiece as the Hornets defeated Washington, 110-102, for their second win in 13 road games.

Charlotte led 78-75 after three quarters and took its largest lead at 91-82 on a 3-pointer by Wesley with 6:42 left. But the Wizards went on a 12-3 run, tying the game on a layup by Rod Strickland with 4:02 remaining.

The teams traded baskets and two free throws by Strickland knotted the contest, 96-96, with 3:13 to play. But the Hornets scored the next six points as Jones had four, including a layup with 1:39 left off a tremendous block by Coleman.

"We got a turnover, blocked shot and a rebound, and we just took advantage of our opportunities," Coleman said. "I felt the key down the stretch was making sure that we executed. We really took our time and made sure we got something each time down the floor."

Strickland's basket with 40 seconds to play cut Charlotte's lead to 105-102, but the Hornets broke the press and Coleman drove for a dunk with 33 seconds left to ice the victory.

"We haven't really gutted it out on the road," Charlotte coach Paul Silas said. "When we've won, it's been a blowout. Tonight was a gut win, and we need to learn to gut it out. All in all, we played good defense down the stretch."

The Wizards were plagued by foul trouble throughout the night, allowing a franchise-record 55 free-throw attempts, with the Hornets making 42.

"We got to the line," said Campbell, who sank 15-of-18 free throws. "We missed more than we normally do, but we got enough to carry us."

Mitch Richmond scored 22 points and Strickland added 20 for Washington, which fell to 1-3 under interim coach Darrell Walker. The Wizards dropped their fourth straight game to Charlotte.

The Hornets took a 25-23 after the first quarter and led 53-49 after a basket by Coleman with 1:42 left in the second period. But Strickland and Isaac Austin made consecutive baskets to tie the game with 45 seconds to play. Mason sank two free throws with 35 seconds remaining as Charlotte took a 55-53 at the intermission.

The Hornets went to the line 27 times in the first half, making 23. The Wizards made only 6-of-10 free throws.

"We need to learn how to defend and contest shots without fouling," Walker said. "We had a chance to win tonight but we just couldn't get it done."

Campbell scored 15 points in the first half, including nine in the second quarter, and was 9-of-10 from the foul line.

There were eight ties and 14 lead changes in the third quarter. After two free throws by Juwan Howard gave Washington a 73-72 advantage 2:25 remaining, the Hornets went on a 6-0 run as Jones and rookie Baron Davis had three points each. Washington rookie Richard Hamilton's basket with 31 seconds to play cut Charlotte's lead to three.

Howard, Washington's second-leading scorer, left the game early with a dislocated finger, but came back to score 15 points and grab 10 rebounds.
