Game Story

PHOENIX (Ticker) -- The Phoenix Suns won all the individual battles and the war, earning a home-and-home split with a 105-93 victory over the frustrated Seattle SuperSonics.

Jason Kidd got even in his superstar guard matchup with Gary Payton, narrowly missing his NBA-best third triple-double of the season with 22 points, seven rebounds and 12 assists.

"Jason did a great job on Payton," Suns coach Scott Skiles said. "In fact, all five guys played great defense and that led to easy baskets and sort of took the burden off of us scoring-wise."

Tom Gugliotta slapped Ruben Patterson in the face on a layup attempt and received a flagrant foul early in the fourth quarter, then scored 12 of his 16 points as Phoenix cruised to its fourth straight home win.

"Anytime you can win at home, it's a good thing," Kidd said. "Anytime you can beat a team you're chasing it's a good thing. Now, if we can finish up this homestand undefeated, you never know where you can end up at the All-Star break."

Rodney Rogers also scored 22 points for the Suns, who rebounded from Friday's 94-86 loss in Seattle and moved within 1 1/2 games of the SuperSonics for fourth place in the Western Conference in the opener of a three-game homestand.

"Tonight, we stuck in there from the beginning," Rogers said. "We had a one-point lead at the half and we knew they were going to come out shooting the ball. We tried to minimize their offense and keep them from what they wanted to do. That was the difference from Friday night -- defense."

Sonics coach Paul Westphal was ejected by referee Jack Nies for arguing a call with 7:49 to play, 54 seconds after forward Vin Baker was hit with a technical foul for doing the same. Westphal chased Nies beyond midcourt.

"First of all, I don't want to talk about it," said Westphal, who coached the Suns to the NBA Finals in 1993. "I don't want to get fined. I really don't want to talk about it. I just want to talk about the game. They just played with more energy than we did."

Payton finished with 13 points, seven rebounds and seven assists for Seattle, which has alternated wins and losses in its last six games and is 3-6 after a six-game winning streak.

Rashard Lewis scored 17 of his career-high 22 points and Shammond Williams added 11 of his 13 in Seattle's 31-point fourth quarter, but the Sonics trailed by at least 12 throughout the period.

The Suns opened up a 72-58 lead with 79 seconds to go in the third as Kidd scored the first six points of an 8-0 run. He started it with a dunk, added two free throws and hit a layup before assisting Gugliotta's slam.

Kidd hit 7-of-12 shots from the field, including both of his 3-point attempts. He had nine points, two rebounds, three assists, a block and no turnovers in the third.

"He played aggressive and made shots," Payton said. "I mean he couldn't make a shot Friday, but he made all of his shots tonight. That's just how the game goes."

Known as "The Glove," Payton lived up to his nickname by recording five steals. But he went just 4-of-18 from the field, two days after collecting 23 points, a career-high 13 rebounds and seven assists.

The All-Star failed to score during the pivotal third quarter, going 0-of-3 from the field to go along with three turnovers, three rebounds and two assists.

"I don't know how big a game he had on Friday. They won," Kidd said. "That was probably below Gary's standards and tonight was another one below his standards."

With Phoenix leading 78-62 in the first minute of the fourth quarter, Gugliotta sent Patterson flying with a slap to the face. Patterson received a technical foul and was physically restrained by Lewis before sinking a pair of free throws.

"I was going after that guy," Patterson said. "I was real hot at the time. The guy did it to me twice. The second time, I just said, `Forget it.' I was going after him, I couldn't take it anymore. I got up and said, `Forget that.'"

The Sonics came up empty on their ensuing possession before Gugliotta followed in a missed jumper by Rogers and answered Patterson with a glare.

Gugliotta had nine rebounds and six steals and Penny Hardaway added 19 points and six of Phoenix's 30 assists. The Suns shot 49 percent (41-of-83), going 6-of-11 from 3-point range.

Brent Barry scored 14 points for the Sonics, who went 9-of-27 from behind the arc and shot just 38 percent (32-of-85) overall. Lewis added eight rebounds in 24 minutes off the bench.
