Game Story

HOUSTON (Ticker) -- Shandon Anderson scored nine of his 23 points in the fourth quarter, when the Houston Rockets wore down the undermanned Cleveland Cavaliers and pulled away for a 91-83 victory.

Anderson also grabbed 10 rebounds for Houston, which outscored Cleveland 30-19 in the final period and won for the fourth time in six games. Walt Williams scored 17 points and rookie Kenny Thomas added 14 and eight rebounds off the bench for the Rockets.

"Our bench was really great, we lost the lead in the third quarter but the reserves came in and did a great job," said Houston coach Rudy Tomjanovich. "We found a way to get it done down the stretch. Earlier in the year we missed our opportunities to win, but we're not making those mistakes now."

With 12 points from Hakeem Olajuwon and 11 from Cuttino Mobley, Houston's bench outscored Cleveland's reserves, 39-8. The Rockets scored 26 points off 22 turnovers.

"Turnovers were critical for us tonight," said Cleveland coach Randy Wittman. "I thought we handled the ball too carelessly. Being shorthanded, every possession is important, but 22 turnovers was really the difference in the game. We fed into their running game with our turnovers."

The Cavs were missing injured starting guards Bob Sura and Brevin Knight and reserve forward Cedric Henderson. Knight sat out with right quadriceps tendinitis, Sura was sidelined with a sprained toe and Henderson is expected to miss seven weeks with torn thumb ligaments.

Cleveland used just four players off the bench and forward Mark Bryant was the only one who scored with all his points coming in the first half.

Shawn Kemp had 23 points and 10 rebounds and rookie Andre Miller added 21 and seven for Cleveland, which lost its eight straight road game. Miller also handed out seven assists but committed six turnovers.

"I have to go out and play hard, but I can't have as many turnovers as I did tonight," Miller said. "I was too carless with the ball, but I have to be aggressive."

Thomas scored eight of his points when the Rockets opened the fourth period with a 21-5 run to take the lead for good. There were 10 lead changes before Anderson made a layup to put Houston ahead for good, 68-67, with just under 10 minutes remaining. Thomas nailed a 3-pointer to cap the run and give Houston an 82-69 lead with 5:53 to go.

"In the third quarter we did a poor job of getting into our offensive sets," Anderson said. "Guys weren't getting in the right places on the floor. In the fourth quarter we knew our sets and made the right plays."

The Rockets held a 45-39 lead at the break on 11 points from Williams and 10 from Anderson.

Cleveland closed the third period with a 13-4 spurt and took a 64-61 lead on Wesley Person's layup with 5.6 seconds remaining. Miller scored 11 points in the period as the Cavaliers shot 60 percent (12-of-20) from the field and held the Rockets to 16 points.

Houston rookie point guard Steve Francis returned to the starting lineup after missing two games with a right knee sprain. The team's leading scorer shot just 2-of-13 in 24 minutes.

"I felt all right tonight. Coach did a good job of putting me into the game in spurts," Francis said. "I didn't deserve to be out there the whole game. My timing was off, but I'm getting it back. It hasn't been much fun sitting on the bench. I'm glad to be back in and it will be better tomorrow."
