Game Story

ATLANTA (Ticker) -- Jim Jackson scored 13 of his 23 points in the first quarter as the Atlanta Hawks put away the Houston Rockets early and coasted to a 116-100 victory.

Jackson came out smoking, knocking down 6-of-7 shots over the first 12 minutes to stake the Hawks to a 30-17 lead they did not surrender. He finished 10-of-14 from the field and 2-of-2 at the line for Atlanta, which has won six of its last nine games.

"I shot the ball pretty well," Jackson said. "I had some good opportunities. I got to get in the post where I'm real comfortable. I thought the team overall played well. In the second half of the season, defensively, we have to pick it up more than anything else."

"Jimmy was really on fire in the first quarter and that helped us get going," Atlanta coach Lenny Wilkens said. "We had good shots, too. When you're getting good shots and the ball's going in, it's a lot easier. I thought we utilized the screens a whole lot better than we have. We came off screens and the guys were wide open and had great shots, great looks at the basket."

Bimbo Coles scored 16 points and Isaiah Rider and Lorenzen Wright added 14 apiece for the Hawks, who have taken seven of eight home meetings from the Rockets. Atlanta (19-28) enters the All-Star break 5 1/2 games behind Detroit (25-23) for the final Eastern Conference playoff spot.

"We're playing a lot better and it gives you a better taste in your mouth going into the second half of the season, knowing that you're not too far behind," Rider said.

Cuttino Mobley scored a career-high 30 points for the Rockets, who have lost three of four and slipped to 7-17 away from the Compaq Center.

Mobley made 12-of-19 shots. He scored 12 points in extended garbage time after the Hawks opened a 30-point third-quarter lead.

"Being down 30 points is no fun," Mobley said. "When I came in, we were down 27. I was trying to get it back but they kept making shots and we were just dead as a team."

Jackson gave an early sign of things to come by burying a 25-footer to open the scoring. He made a 17-footer, two 19-footers and was good from 10 and 12 feet as Atlanta opened a 30-15 cushion with 45 seconds remaining in the first quarter.

Jackson showed no signs of slowing down in the second period, making a driving layup and a 14-footer that made it 42-24 with 8:07 left in the half.

Dikembe Mutombo, Alan Henderson and rookie Jason Terry had 10 points apiece for Atlanta, which shot 56 percent and made a season-high 50 field goals. The Hawks held a 52-32 advantage on the boards.

Rookie Steve Francis scored 13 points and Hakeem Olajuwon added 12 for Houston, which shot 42 percent (35-of-83) and scored 27 points off turnovers while yielding 12.

"I think we overlooked them a little bit too much and that could have been what it was," Francis said. "We made a mistake, we should have gone out on a better note, but we didn't."

The Rockets enter the break at 20-30 but have won 10 of 16 since a dismal 10-24 start.

"We didn't have any energy until that last little deal at the end when we went real small," Houston coach Rudy Tomjanovich said. "I don't want to believe that we're on vacation already. It's been six games in nine days, it's a welcome breather. They have great individual 1-on-1 players. When they're going, it's a hard team to beat."
