Game Story

ATLANTA (Ticker) -- Dikembe Mutombo posted his first triple-double of the season with 21 points, 13 rebounds and 11 blocks, leading the Atlanta Hawks to a 103-86 rout of the New Jersey Nets, who were without forward Keith Van Horn.

Coming off his All-Star appearance, Mutombo was able to dominate the Nets inside, taking advantage of the absence of Van Horn. The 6-10 forward did not travel with the team so that he could be with his wife, who is expecting a child.

Without their starting power forward, New Jersey had even less of an inside game than usual, dropping its 11th straight game in Atlanta dating to 1994. The Nets are a dismal 10-42 here overall.

Alan Henderson also provided an inside presence with 21 points on 7-of-9 shooting and 11 rebounds for the Hawks, who have won seven of their last 10 games.

"Dikembe was awesome and Alan was terrific," Atlanta coach Lenny Wilkens said.

Wilkens removed Mutombo from the game with 7:44 to play but sent him back a minute later after he became aware that Mutombo was one block short of the coveted feat.

"He played hard -- we put him back in," Wilkens said. "I told the guys to send people baseline. The first few trips, no one sent them baseline, but then he got three blocks in a row."

"It was a really great thing what my coaches did," said an appreciative Mutombo. "I thought I already had more than 10. I think it was great that they put me back in to try to get the block. I didn't know why (the Nets) were still coming up on me, even when I had 11."

Stephon Marbury scored 27 points to lead New Jersey, which trailed throughout en route to its ninth consecutive road loss. The Nets dropped to 4-20 on the road this season.

"We came out flat tonight," Marbury said. "I think in our situation, we just have to rebound from this game and get ready for the next one."

The Hawks shot 58 percent (11-of-19) in the first quarter while the Nets continually misfired from the outside, connecting on only 23 percent (6-of-26).

"We were aggressive and moved the ball," Wilkens added. "Guys were real unselfish in the first half, maybe a little too unselfish. We picked it up in the second half."

New Jersey, which trailed by as many as 16 points in the first half, closed within 57-53 with 5:06 left in the third quarter as Marbury capped a 10-2 run with a layup and 3-pointer. But the Hawks scored the next seven points, with Isaiah Rider's 3-point play providing the final blow, to take a 64-53 lead with 3:30 remaining.

Atlanta entered the final quarter with a 74-62 lead and never was challenged thereafter, extending the lead to 92-72 on a layup by Mutombo with 6:10 to play.

"(Mutombo) intimidates us so much that we just back off," Nets coach Don Casey said. "Every time we got within reach, we go with the fouls again. There's no question that the athleticism on the front line is what we need, and to a certain extent that would be Keith and Jayson (Williams)."

Former Net Jimmy Jackson had four 3-pointers and contributed 20 points and LaPhonso Ellis came off the bench to shoot 6-of-6 and grab eight rebounds for Atlanta, which made half its shots (40-of-80) while holding a 49-46 rebounding edge.

"We needed to come out and get this game to build some confidence for the second half of the season," Jackson said. "When everybody plays well and plays together we're a tough team. Tonight we played unselfishly. Everybody came out and contributed one way or another."

Lucious Harris added 15 points for the Nets, whose 33 percent (31-of-95) shooting represented a season low for an Atlanta opponent this season.
