Game Story

HOUSTON (Ticker) -- Shandon Anderson scored 11 of his 25 points in the first quarter to lead the Houston Rockets to their seventh straight home win against the Detroit Pistons, 107-102.

Anderson made 4-of-5 shots in the opening 12 minutes, including a dunk and a 3-pointer during a 14-4 burst that ended the period and gave Houston a 27-19 lead. The Rockets did not trail thereafter and have not lost to the Pistons at home since 1992.

"I think we came out fast, fresh and ready to play," Anderson said. "This is how we wanted to start (the second half). To get off on the right foot. We were just having fun out there. The tempo that we had tonight is what we need and what people want to see, that freestyle type of play."

The Pistons pulled within 76-74 on Jerry Stackhouse's jumper with 22 seconds left in the third quarter, but rookie Kenny Thomas knocked down a 3-pointer with two seconds left in the period and Houston held on in the fourth.

Cuttino Mobley scored 21 points off the bench and fellow reserve Thomas added 17 for the Rockets, who improved to 14-13 at the Compaq Center this season. Houston has won 11 of 17 overall since a dismal 10-24 start.

"We moved the basketball well and made our shots early," Mobley said. "I just wanted to come off the bench aggressively. I think I did that and scored some early 3s."

Houston's bench outscored Detroit's, 49-11.

"Thomas did well off the bench too and that's the kind of start we need from all the guys," Mobley added.

Stackhouse scored 29 points and fellow All-Star Hill had 23 and 11 rebounds for Detroit, which dropped its seventh straight road contest since a 112-107 triumph at Washington on December 15.

"Our defense is non-existent," Stackhouse said. "Houston had way too many easy baskets. They had more opportunities than we did because they created them. If we could pinpoint what's wrong and adjust as the game goes on instead of waiting till we're way down, we might not find ourselves in these situations."

Hakeem Olajuwon scored 11 points and Kelvin Cato grabbed a season-high 13 rebounds for the Rockets, who shot 48 percent (39-of-82) and held a 46-36 advantage on the boards. Houston outscored Detroit 44-28 in the paint and also held a 20-14 advantage in fast-break points.

"The rebounding was the key," Anderson said. "You can't get out on a break without the rebounds. But we got them tonight, kicked the balls out to the guard and got the fast points."

Hill's 17-footer with 5:37 left in the first quarter gave Detroit a 15-11 lead. Walt Williams answered with a 22-footer and rookie Steve Francis tied the game with a layup. Williams hit from 25 feet and Francis dunked before Anderson closed the quarter with a 3-pointer and a dunk to make it 27-19.

Thomas opened the second quarter with an 18-footer and Mobley hit from beyond the arc to make it 34-31. Mobley's 24-footer opened a 50-33 bulge with 2:55 left in the half before the Pistons began crawling back into contention.

Stackhouse and Lindsey Hunter scored six points apiece during a 17-2 third-quarter run that shaved the deficit to 70-68 with 3:38 left in the third quarter. Mobley made two free throws and Anderson hit a layup before Hunter answered with his third 3-pointer of the period and a layup.

Thomas and Stackhouse traded baskets before Thomas ended the quarter with a 24-footer from the left sideline that gave Houston a 79-74 lead entering the fourth quarter.

"We need to look at this game and get better," Hill said. "We've had our ups and downs but we need to find a way to pull these out. Anderson hit some great shots and got them going. They are a tough team and are not as bad as their record might indicate."

Anderson had a layup and Thomas a follow shot as Houston opened an 87-77 bulge with 9:55 to play. Francis supplied the dagger with six minutes left when he sank an improbable 37-footer to beat the shot clock and make it 98-83.

"It was a good game," Francis said. "We played great early and kept it up down the stretch. We had to get the kinks out after a five-day break. I'm happy we got this win, coach is happy with this win. We came out a little slow in the second (quarter) but that had to do with us being off for five days."
