Game Story

MIAMI (Ticker) -- The All-Star break did nothing to cool off Jamal Mashburn.

Masburn continued his torrid scoring, collecting 26 points in three quarters as the Miami Heat rolled to a 107-88 victory over the floundering Los Angeles Clippers.

The 6-8 forward knocked down 9-of-14 shots, including 4-of-6 from 3-point range. He also grabbed eight rebounds, handed out three assists and did not commit a turnover in 31 minutes.

Mashburn, who scored 26 points in a 115-100 victory over Golden State here on Wednesday, has eclipsed 20 points in each of his last six games. He had a layup and a 3-pointer on consecutive trips during a 9-2 second-quarter spurt that gave the Heat the lead for good at 39-32 with 9:03 remaining in the first half.

"We need to continue to take care of ourselves," Mashsburn said. "I just want to go out there and play."

Alonzo Mourning had 20 points and 13 boards for Miami, which never trailed in posting its sixth straight win at American Airlines Arena.

"I don't care what competition is out there," Mourning said. "A win is a win. The bottom line is we have to play on a more consistent basis. We haven't been doing that. We're trying to get back to that level of play. Especially the way we've been playing at the beginning of the year."

The Heat improved their lead in the Atlantic Division to two games over the New York Knicks and posted their seventh straight win against the Clippers. Miami coach Pat Riley improved to 56-12 all-time against Los Angeles.

"Mashburn had another stellar night and our rebounding was exceptional," Riley said. "Running the ball down the court really helps Mash in his game. Our success in the second half of the season is going to be determined by a consistency from Alonzo, Mashburn, Tim (Hardaway) and P.J. (Brown), the guys we count on every night."

The Heat has won five of six overall to move within one game of idle Indiana (32-16) for the top spot in the Eastern Conference.

Eric Murdock and Eric Piatkowski scored 15 points apiece for the Clippers, who slipped to 0-5 under interim coach Jim Todd and suffered their 13th straight road loss. Los Angeles has dropped seven in a row and 17 of 18 overall.

"We figured we'd have to shoot 45 percent, get around 90-plus shots and hope they were cold," Todd said. "That was our idea, but it didn't go as planned. We wanted to try and be a little exciting.

"I talked to them at the All-Star break about playing that way, freelance and up and down the floor. However, to play that kind of system, you have to be able to rebound, control the boards and play defense. If we can't do those things, then it doesn't matter what way we play."

Maurice Taylor and Michael Olowokandi had 12 points each for Los Angeles, which was without rookie Lamar Odom (left knee tendinitis) and second-year forward Tyrone Nesby (toe).

"The doctor saw (Odom) today," Todd said. "He's on a flight to Orlando. I'm pretty sure he'll play tomorrow."

Point guard Hardaway managed just two points on 1-of-8 shooting, handing out six assists and committing five turnovers. But Hardaway has had a big impact on Mashburn's recent surge. Mashburn is averaging better than 21 points in the 11-game span since Hardaway returned from a jammed right knee on January 21.

"He just keeps doing his thing," Hardaway said. "We give it to him with late (shot) clocks and isolations because he can do a lot with the basketball."

Voshon Lenard scored 15 points and P.J. Brown added 10 for Miami, which shot 46 percent (41-of-89), held a whopping 63-37 advantage on the boards and scored 23 points off turnovers.

"We played as well as we had to play to win," Riley said. "We did a lot of great things in the game. The schedule is going to start stacking up on us, so it's a good win. We caught a break without Lamar Odom and Tyrone Nesby. Two real athletic players that like to run."

Los Angeles shot 38 percent (33-of-86).

Mashburn's free throw with 56 seconds left in the first quarter gave the Heat a 30-23 lead, but Charles Jones buried a 3-pointer, Brian Skinner made a layup and Keith Closs dunked to forge a 30-30 tie with 11:17 remaining in the first half.

Clarence Weatherspoon and Mashburn made layups, Mashburn connected from 24 feet and Otis Thorpe drove for a basket and dunked over Closs to make it 41-34 with 8:05 left in the period.

Brown hit an 11-footer and added a follow shot just before the half to give Miami a 59-44 lead at the break.

Derek Anderson's 21-footer cut the deficit to 59-48 but Mourning made two free throws and dunked before Mashburn hit from beyond the arc to open a 66-48 with just under nine minutes left in the third quarter.
