Game Story

CLEVELAND (Ticker) -- No starting backcourt, no problem for the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Shooting guard Wesley Person scored a season-high 24 points and reserve point guard Earl Boykins added career highs of 22 and 10 assists as the Cleveland Cavaliers coasted to a 119-101 victory over the Denver Nuggets.

While starting 2-guard Bobby Sura continued to nurse a sprained toe, Person filled in admirably, hitting 9-of-14 shots, grabbing nine rebounds and handing out five assists in 44 minutes.

"I knew I could play like this," Person said. "I just needed the opportunity. This is a big win. Now we need to win on the road."

Rookie Andre Miller started at the point for Brevin Knight, who was scratched from the lineup with right quadriceps tendinitis. Miller had 14 points, 13 assists and nine rebounds, just missing his second career triple-double, but it was his backup who stole the show.

Boykins, a 5-5 second-year playmaker out of Eastern Michigan, lit up the Nuggets, knocking down 8-of-12 shots and 5-of-5 free throws in 27 minutes off the bench.

Playing the final game of his 10-day contract, Boykins brought Gund Arena crowd to its feet on several occasions, weaving his way through defenders to create easy scoring opportunities for his teammates or finishing with an off-balance layup.

"I just went out and played hard, I stayed relaxed," Boykins said. "Randy (Cleveland coach Randy Wittman) allows me to play and this style definitely helps me."

"He was huge," Denver forward Raef LaFrentz said. "He had a great game and I think they said he had a 10-day contract. They should sign him for longer than that because he can give a team quite a few things."

Lamond Murray scored 24 points and Danny Ferry added a season-high 19 off the bench for Cleveland, which improved to 17-9 at Gund Arena with its seventh win in eight home games.

Shawn Kemp, Cleveland's leading scorer and rebounder, had most of the night off, scoring 10 points and grabbing eight boards in 20 minutes.

Antonio McDyess and Keon Clark scored 19 points apiece for the Nuggets, who have lost six of seven overall and fell to 4-18 on the road.

"We didn't do anyting defensively tonight," Denver coach Dan Issel said. "When you let a team shoot 53 percent, that shows the lack of defense on our part."

Denver playmaker Nick Van Exel had nine points and 15 assists and starting backcourt mate Tariq Abdul-Wahad added 12 points. But the duo was thoroughly outplayed by the triumvirate of Person, Miller and Boykins, who combined to help Cleveland to a season-high 36 assists.

"We had guys out there tonight that went out and played hard," Wittman said. "They shared the ball and with 36 assists on 46 baskets, you don't get much better than that in the NBA."

Wittman also indicated that Boykins would be signed to another 10-day contract on Friday.

Trailing 28-27 entering the second quarter, the Cavaliers quickly took command as Ferry hit a 17-footer, Boykins sank a 3-pointer and Kemp made a runner to give them a 34-28 lead with 10:10 left in the half. Cleveland did not trail thereafter.

The Cavs pulled away in the fourth quarter. Boykins hit a 12-footer to make it 100-87 before Miller made a free throw and Person a 3-pointer to open a 17-point bulge with 7:57 to play.

Bryant Stith and Chris Gatling scored 14 points apiece for Denver, which shot 42 percent (36-of-85) and was outrebounded, 47-40.
