Game Story

DALLAS (Ticker) -- Who needs Dennis Rodman?

Dirk Nowitzki scored 22 points and Steve Nash had 14 of his 18 in the fourth quarter as the Dallas Mavericks proved they may be better off without Rodman, rallying for a 106-97 victory over the road-weary Detroit Pistons.

Rodman was fined $10,000 and received a one-game suspension for his actions during a 112-99 loss to Milwaukee on Tuesday that dropped Dallas to 0-2 since his acquisition.

The controversial 6-8 forward added another sordid chapter to his book of rebellious actions by challenging NBA commissioner David Stern to a fight in an interview after practice on Wednesday.

"That was a big game for us because, as you know, we have lost two in a row and things are basically going to get harder," Dallas coach Don Nelson said. "Not that this wasn't hard. We gave everything we had tonight. And came up a winner. I'm thankful for that and I am very pleased with the performance."

The Mavericks had won seven of eight games before Rodman's debut and seemed more focused in his absence tonight.

"I think eventually we are going to be a better team with Dennis, but its hard to intergrate a guy into a team and after two games decide that he's hurt our team," Nash said. "I think that's wrong."

Dallas trailed 80-70 late in the third quarter, but Nowitzki and Nash combined to fuel a decisive 21-8 run that Nash capped with a seven-footer for a 91-88 lead with 5:44 to play.

Nowitzki made half his 16 shots, including 4-of-5 3-pointers, and grabbed 12 rebounds. Nash was 6-of-7 over the final 12 minutes and sealed the win with a 17-footer and a driving layup on consecutive trips to open a 102-93 cushion with 1:31 left.

"Depending on the style of game, depending on how many minutes I play, some nights they need me like that," Nash said. "I was just fortunate that coach kept coming to me. It payed off. It was fun."

Mavericks owner-in-waiting Mark Cuban, who was instrumental in luring Rodman, was dancing in his courtside seat as Nowitzki and Nash lit up the Pistons down the stretch.

"I think we all knew we had to take it to the next level rebounding-wise," Nowitzki said. "That's about it. We had five guys in the paint battling for balls and that's what we've got to have even when Dennis is there."

Jerry Stackhouse scored 22 points and Grant Hill added 20 -- but just two in the second half -- for Detroit, which suffered its eighth straight road loss.

"We had enough points to win," Hill said. "They scored every time. They either hit the three or went to the hole. Our offense was fine. We had enough points to win the game. We didn't do what we had to do on defense. Same old story."

The Pistons have not won away from home since December 15 and had their lead for the final Eastern Conference playoff spot cut to one-half game over surging Orlando.

"We want to get into the playoffs, no doubt," Hill said. "We're still in that spot but we have to right the ship if we want to make it. We can't afford to keep having this losing streak. We've got to regroup. We've got to stick together. We can't quit on each other. We've got to continue to pull each other up and continue to fight through this."

Lindsey Hunter scored 16 points and Michael Curry added 14 for Detroit, which raced to a 34-27 lead after one quarter. The Pistons appeared to take control late in the third period when John Crotty's free throw gave them an 80-70 lead with 1:38 remaining.

But Erick Strickland hit a 25-footer and Nowitzki made back-to-back 3-pointers as the Mavericks closed to 80-79 entering the fourth period, bringing the crowd at Reunion Arena to its feet.

Nash made the Mavs' fourth straight shot from beyond the arc to open the final period, knocking down a 24-footer from the right corner to put Dallas in front, 82-80.

Hill's layup gave Detroit its last lead before Nash put Dallas ahead to stay at 89-88 with another 3-pointer with 6:54 left. Nash made a seven-footer and Cedric Ceballos a layup to make it 93-88 with 5:05 left.

Hunter hit a 25-footer to get Detroit within two, but Nowitzki once again hit from long range to restore the five-point advantage.

Ceballos and Finley scored 21 points apiece and Strickland had 13 and 10 rebounds for Dallas, which shot 46 percent (42-of-91) and held a 46-43 advantage on the boards. The Mavericks yielded 20 points off turnovers but finished 12-of-23 from 3-point range.

"We knew what (Rodman) brought to our team and without him everybody had to take it up a notch," Finley said. "From rebounding to outscrapping and doing all the little things. I think everybody took it upon themselves to do that tonight. It was evident with Erick's rebounds and Dirk's rebounds and ultimately we all rebounded as a team and we got a win from it."

Williams had 11 points and 17 boards for Detroit, which shot 42 percent (34-of-82).
