Game Story

CHARLOTTE, North Carolina (Ticker) -- Derrick Coleman had 17 points and nine rebounds and Eddie Jones scored 16 points as the Charlotte Hornets used a balanced attack for a 115-87 romp over the floundering Los Angeles Clippers.

Each starter scored in double figures for Charlotte, which won for the fifth time in six games and moved within 1 1/2 games of third-place New York in the Eastern Conference.

"I thought we moved the ball pretty well tonight," said Charlotte coach Paul Silas. "It was a very important win for us because teams in our division didn't do so well tonight. We didn't have to play our front line big minutes because our bench came up big."

Elden Campbell recorded 15 points and 12 rebounds while Anthony Mason and David Wesley each contributed 13 points for the Hornets. Charlotte shot 54.5 percent (48-of-88) from the field and held a huge 52-32 rebounding advantage.

The Hornets also got their substitutes significant action as no starter played more than 31 minutes. Rookie Baron Davis led the reserves with 10 points and seven assists in 19 minutes. Ricky Davis scored eight points, hitting all four of his shots in eight minutes.

"Rick Davis played under control and Eddie Robinson was fantastic," Silas noted. "We have another measuring stick game on Sunday against Miami (second in conference) and it can be a step towards where we want to be. I look forward to it and like our chances. Right now I think we're playing on all cylinders and I like where the team is."

Maurice Taylor scored 22 points off the bench and rookie Lamar Odom had 16 points and 10 rebounds for the Clippers. Los Angeles shot 40 percent (34-of-85), lost to Charlotte for the fourth straight time and fell to 0-7 under interim coach Jim Todd.

The Clippers (11-41) lead the NBA in losses and have dropped nine in a row, 15 straight on the road and 19 of 20 overall.

"You're not going to win too many games when you shoot 40 percent," Todd said. "We had only eight turnovers which is excellent for us. We are trying to slow down the tempo of the game. We also tried to work on our shot selection. Unfortunately we got killed on the boards. They got points in the paint in the first quarter and were getting too many easy layups for most of the game."

Charlotte put Los Angeles away early, closing the first quarter with a 15-2 run to take a 33-24 lead. Mason had six points during the run that Jones capped with a tip-in at the buzzer.

The Hornets rested their starters for a good part of the second quarter and rookie Eddie Robinson scored eight points to push the lead to 60-49 at halftime.

Mason made a hook shot to cap a 9-2 burst that opened the third period and gave Charlotte a 69-51 lead. The Hornets opened the fourth with seven straight points, making it 91-72 when Wesley made a pair of free throws with 9:33 remaining. The Clippers did not cut the margin below 18 points thereafter.

"It could have been a game we overlooked," Wesley said. "I'm just glad we stayed with it. We got our bench out there and got quality minutes. That means we took care of business."
