Game Story

PHOENIX (Ticker) -- Rodney Rogers had his second straight big game and the surging Phoenix Suns took charge early in the third quarter to record their fifth straight win, 85-73 over the Atlanta Hawks.

Coming off a career-high 36-point performance against Sacramento on Tuesday, Rogers netted 24 points tonight on 10-of-19 shooting in 33 minutes off the bench.

"Once again, Rodney came in and gave us a big lift," Suns coach Scott Skiles said. "He's clearly one of the best bench players in the NBA.

After a lackluster first half by both teams, the Suns opened the third quarter with a 17-4 spurt, scoring the last 13 in the run to open a 54-39 advantage with less than six minutes left in the period.

Luc Longley added 15 points for the Suns, who have won seven of eight overall while improving to 22-5 at home this season. Phoenix also is 24-0 all-time when holding opponents under 80 points.

"Our defense is getting much, much better," Skiles said. "We're reacting quicker, getting there on time. What we haven't been doing well is boxing out and rebounding well."

Dikembe Mutombo had 12 points and 25 rebounds for Atlanta, which was held to its lowest point total of the season. Mutombo's rebound total fell four shy of his season high, set on December 14 against Minnesota.

"Nobody can take me out of my game," Mutombo said. "I'm the only one that can control my destiny. They tried all the dirty stuff out there but my head was too strong. I was very impressed with myself, the way I played but I didn't get any fouls and it wasn't good enough to help my team."

Isaiah Rider converted a follow shot early in the third quarter to bring the Hawks within 41-39, but that was as close as they would get.

Tom Gugliotta, who made just 2-of-12 shots, hit a 15-footer and Rogers followed with a 3-pointer and a jumper, triggering a 13-0 spurt that pushed the lead to 54-39 with 5:24 remaining in the period. Rogers had seven points and Gugliotta all six of his in the burst.

"The third quarter was more energy, more commitment to defense, and not letting them catch the ball where they like," Gugliotta said. "We were real lethargic in the first half. Scott gave us a little pep talk, and we went back out there and turned it up."

Rider came in as the leading scorer for the Hawks at 21.7 points but finished with just nine on 4-of-11 shooting before fouling out with 9:22 left in the fourth quarter.

The Hawks struggled all night from the floor, shooting just 36 percent (27-of-75). They also committed 22 turnovers but did manage a 60-45 rebounding advantage.

Atlanta actually led by as many as seven points in the second quarter but the Suns battled back to take a 37-35 lead at the break behind 11 points from Longley, who played despite suffering from flu-like symptoms.

"We couldn't make any shots," Atlanta coach Lenny Wilkens said. "We substituted in the second quarter and that really hurt us. We were up eight and immediately go down by three."

Phoenix shot 41 percent (37-of-90).
