Game Story

TORONTO (Ticker) -- Cedric Ceballos and Michael Finley scored 23 points apiece as the Dallas Mavericks won for the first time with Dennis Rodman in the lineup, 100-96 over the slumping Toronto Raptors.

Ceballos, the Mavericks' sixth-man, hit a jumper to put Dallas up 82-80 early in the fourth quarter and the lead see-sawed until Finley's jumper gave the Mavericks a 97-94 edge with 1:05 remaining.

The always controversial Rodman, who returned following a one-game suspension, grabbed 16 rebounds before fouling out in the final minute. Dallas improved to 1-2 with Rodman.

"It's always a lift to get Dennis back in the lineup," Ceballos said. "He put up a rebounding exhibition and he has a knack for intimidating."

"That's nothing," Rodman insisted. "Just wait until I get myself in shape. This 38-year-old body has a couple more weeks to go."

Erick Strickland added 18 points and Dirk Nowitzki 12 for the Mavericks, who were coming off Thursday's 106-97 victory over the Detroit Pistons.

"We've been putting it together and hopefully we can continue," said Ceballos, whose club posted its fourth straight win on the road. "I enjoy coming off the bench and burning guys who are a little tired."

Vince Carter scored 24 points and Antonio Davis added 20 for the Raptors, who suffered their third straight loss. Carter fouled out with 35 seconds left.

I like being there when its crunch time, trying to help the team win," Carter said. "It's frustrating fouling out."

Toronto made 12-of-17 foul shots, but Carter got to the line just twice, making one.

"Since the All-Star game Vince cannot get to the foul line," Toronto coach Butch Carter said. "He has to develop a foul move. It's unfair that he's in the lane as much as he is and he can't get calls. Then he fouls out on six touch fouls."

Trailing 98-96, Davis missed two foul shots with 22 seconds remaining. After Sean Rooks hit 1-of-2 from the line for Dallas, Toronto's Tracy McGrady threw the ball away and Finley clinched the win by making a foul shot with 15 seconds to play.

"I think we threw the ball inside a lot but two free throws (for Vince Carter) is not enough," Butch Carter said. "It was something that we've struggled with and it ended up being the difference in the game. We generated fouls in the first half but not in the second. We weren't able to get to the free-throw line in the second half and it killed us."

In Tuesday's 112-99 loss to the Milwaukee Bucks, Rodman was ejected for sitting on the court while protesting an official's call. He subsequently was suspended and fined $10,000 by the NBA for failing to leave the court in a timely matter.

After directing some pointed comments at NBA commissioner David Stern, with whom he has feuded for years, Rodman was on his best bahavior today. He glared at the referees after picking up his fourth foul two minutes into the third quarter and played defense for one possession with his hands in his pants but avoided getting any technicals.

"This win is all right," Rodman said. "I'm just out there having a good time, relaxing and trying to get myself in the groove."

Rodman scored only one point but he made a key block late in the fourth quarter, rejecting a short jumper in the lane by Davis. Nowitzki had made two foul shots to give the Mavericks an 85-84 lead with 2:04 to play.

Charles Oakley's jumper from the top of the key pulled Toronto within 97-96 before Finley hit 1-of-2 from the line to make it 98-96 with 34 seconds to go. Rooks and Finley each converted 1-of-2 foul shots in the final seconds to give Dallas its margin of victory.

Toronto suffered its second straight home loss to a lesser team, falling to the Denver Nuggets, 95-91, on Friday.

"The last two games, the opponent has dictated the tempo of the game and you can't have that," Raptors guard Muggsy Bogues said.

McGrady scored 15 points and Dell Curry added 11 for the Raptors, who lost despite shooting 49 percent (41-of-84) from the field and committing only nine turnovers. Dallas shot only 46 percent (37-of-80) but also turned the ball over just nine times.

After an eight-footer by Hubert Davis gave Dallas a 48-43 lead with 4:41 left in the first half, Antonio Davis drilled a 14-footer to ignite a 15-0 run for the Raptors.

Toronto opened a 58-48 lead on Finley's jumper with 38 seconds remaining before settling for a 58-53 halftime lead. Dallas came out strong in the second half and Ceballos nailed a 3-pointer at the third-quarter buzzer, giving the Mavericks a 78-74 advantage.
