Game Story

CLEVELAND (Ticker) -- Bob Sura returned to the lineup and immediately made his presence felt.

Wesley Person nailed a 3-pointer at the end of regulation to force overtime and Sura made a huge defensive play at the end of the extra period as the Clevleand Cavaliers remained unbeaten all-time against the Vancouver Grizzlies with a 109-108 victory.

The Grizzlies looked like they were headed toward their first-ever victory over Cleveland after Michael Dickerson sank two free throws with 3.1 seconds left in regulation for a 102-99 advantage.

But Person, who scored 11 of his 18 points in the fourth quarter, nailed a 3-pointer as time expired to force overtime. Neither team led by more than two points in overtime and the Cavs went ahead for good, 109-108, with 2:01 left on a three-point play by Mark Bryant.

Following a turnover by rookie Andre Miller with 12 seconds left, the Grizzlies had one last chance. Going without a timeout, Vancouver elected to go to Dickerson, who had the ball stripped in the lane by Sura.

"I don't think Sura even tried to play defense," Dickerson said. "I think he just tried to swipe at me. He got me right on the forearm."

Vancouver coach Lionel Hollins was also upset there was no call.

"Dickerson got fouled. They can say what they want, he got fouled," Hollins said. "That's what happens in this league. Whistles get swallowed at the end and you just have to play on. I'm not upset at the referees that it didn't get called. But that's the way it is."

Sura had missed the last seven games with a toe injury.

Shawn Kemp, the subject of trade rumors, had 26 points and 11 rebounds and Lamond Murray added 25 points for Cleveland, which improved to 8-0 against the Grizzlies.

"Our guys hung in there when they could have broke," Cleveland coach Randy Wittman said. "Our guys responded by stepping up. It wasn't pretty how we executed at the end of the game, but we got back defensively."

Dickerson netted 27 points and Mike Bibby had 27 and 11 assists for Vancouver, which fell to 1-2 on a four-game road trip.

The Grizzlies held an eight-point lead entering the fourth quarter but Cleveland opened the period on a 14-6 spurt that Danny Ferry capped with a 3-pointer to tie it, 87-87, with 7:33 remaining.

Person, who struggled through the first three quarters, nailed consecutive 3-pointers that provided the Cavs with a 97-92 advantage with 3:33 to play. They were still ahead by five following a free throw by Kemp with 2:38 left.

Bibby converted a driving layup and Shareef Abdur-Rahim hit two free throws with 43 seconds left to slice the Vancouver deficit to 99-98. Dickerson made four straight free throws to give Vancouver a three-point lead but Person drilled his 3-pointer to force overtime.

"He wasn't my man from the beginning but we switched everything and when I looked up, he was the only one open," said Grizzlies swingman Doug West. "The first thing I thought of was running him over. But he was in the middle of a pump fake and I should've put him at the line for three shots."

Miller, who has seen increased playing of time of late due to an injury to Brevin Knight, engaged in a spirited battle with Bibby. He was even more effective at the point than his counterpart, finishing with a career-high 14 assists.

Abdur-Rahim added 17 points and nine rebounds for the Grizzlies, who shot 48 percent (42-of-88). Cleveland shot 46 percent (38-of-83).
