Game Story

SALT LAKE CITY (Ticker) -- Karl Malone had 19 points and 10 rebounds and the Utah Jazz got some revenge by holding off the pesky Orlando Magic, 96-88.

The Jazz suffered a tough 104-102 loss to the overachieving Magic on December 20. Tonight, Orlando refused to go away quietly despite Utah's best efforts to put the game out of reach in the second half.

"(Orlando) is one of those teams that stay after you all night," Utah coach Jerry Sloan said. "They play hard and they put you in a tough situation whenever you get a little bit casual."

Malone converted a three-point play with 6:15 to go that gave Utah an 82-73 lead. But rookie Chucky Atkins scored 13 of his 15 points in the fourth quarter, including a 3-pointer and a 23-footer to pull Orlando within 89-86 with 3:29 to play.

Bryon Russell made a layup and Greg Ostertag turned up the defense with a pair of crucial blocks before making two free throws as Utah rebuilt its lead to 93-86 with 1:42 left.

"We've still got to get better when we have teams down 10 or 12 points," Utah guard Jeff Hornacek said. "We've got to bury them. Instead, we go into our `I'll shoot it this time and you shoot it next time' type deal. We let them right back into the game by doing that."

Russell scored 15 points and Ostertag added 11 and a season-high six blocks -- all in the fourth quarter -- for the Jazz, who have won seven of eight since a season-high six-game losing streak. They remained within one game of first-place San Antonio in the Midwest Division.

"The second half, I don't know what happened," Ostertag said. "I just came out and tried to be in a lot more places at once because they had guys driving and taking tough shots and making them. So I figured if I could be a little more active and get my hands up just to bother shots, not necessarily to block them."

Ostertag, who tied Mark Eaton's club record for blocks in one quarter, rejected Atkins and Ron Mercer on consecutive trips down the stretch.

"It just feels good to win," Russell added. "Greg Ostertag really did his job, I'm proud of him. I mean he had some big blocks."

Utah improved to 22-8 at home and has won four in a row at the Delta Center.

John Amaechi scored 24 points for Orlando, which slipped to 0-3 on its four-game road trip, lost its fourth straight overall and fell 1 1/2 games behind Milwaukee for the Eastern Conference's final playoff spot.

"We knew this was going to be a tough road trip when we came out and it's turning out to be that," Orlando coach Doc Rivers said. "Tonight, I thought we really fought well."

Malone made just 7-of-20 shots. He scored 14 first-half points to stake the Jazz to a 55-44 lead. Russell made a 24-footer and was good from 17 feet to make it 62-50 with 6:46 left in the third quarter before the Magic climbed back into contention.

Michael Doleac made a layup to start an 8-0 run that he capped with a 19-footer, shaving the deficit to 62-58 with 3:25 to go in the period.

Utah appeared to recapture the momentum when Armen Gilliam's first 3-point attempt of the season swished through as time expired in the quarter, giving Utah a 69-63 advantage.

After Malone's three-point play gave the Jazz a nine-point cushion, Ben Wallace framed a layup by Atkins with one of his own and a follow shot to cut the deficit to 85-81 with 4:17 left.

Ron Mercer scored 19 points and Darrell Armstrong added 11 for the Magic, who shot 46 percent (31-of-67).

John Stockton had 11 points and eight assists for Utah, which shot 41.5 percent (34-of-82) and held a 45-38 advantage on the boards.

The Magic are winless in four tries here since March 31, 1995.
