Game StoryEAST RUTHERFORD, New Jersey (Ticker) -- Anthony Mason showed up late. So did Keith Van Horn.
Arrested earlier in the day, Mason arrived in the second quarter but his presence was not enough to stop Van Horn, who led the New Jersey Nets to a 104-93 victory over the Charlotte Hornets.
Van Horn scored 12 of his 29 points in the fourth quarter as he matched Charlotte's total for the final period. He made 12-of-16 shots and had three straight New Jersey baskets midway through the quarter to give the Nets control for good.
Kendall Gill scored 23 points and Stephon Marbury added 21 and a season-high 15 assists for the Nets, who held the Hornets without a basket for more than five minutes down the stretch and beat Charlotte for the first time in six meetings.
"This team is a team that's developing continually," said Nets coach Don Casey, whose squad has won 16 of its last 20 home games but still is on the outside looking in at the playoffs. "It's a team that's getting to know each other. It's a sign that they are growing into each other and time is hopefully our ally."
A native New Yorker, Mason was arrested and charged with midemeanor assault after police said he and four other men were involved in a fight with three other men at approximately 4:30 a.m. EST at Perks Bar and Restaurant in Manhattan. He maintains he was trying to break up the fight.
"I'm not going to run and hide from it," Mason said. "I didn't feel I did anything wrong except probably be there. ... Hindsight is great if you go into a trouble spot, but it wasn't like that. It's not a wild raucous bar or nothing like that where people get drunk. I've been going there for years and never had a problem. I still haven't had a problem."
After posting $1,000 bond 45 minutes before tip-off, Mason arrived at Continental Airlines Arena in the first quarter and joined his team on the bench early in the second period. Obviously tired, he still played 28 minutes and scored six points, all on free throws.
"I'll take a lot of the blame for tonight because I think this team has gotten so close that they do care a lot about each other," Mason said. "And when something like that happens, it stays on a person's mind, regardless of whether they admit it or not. So I'll take full blame for this game."
"You can't really blame it on anybody but us," teammate David Wesley said. "A lack of effort down the stretch, just plain not getting stops, not putting the ball in the basket and throwing the ball away."
Former Net Derrick Coleman had 24 points and 10 rebounds and Eddie Jones scored 23 points for the Hornets, who shot just 23.5 percent (4-of-17) in the fourth quarter and dropped their second straight game. By contrast, Van Horn made 5-of-6 shots in the final period.
Charlotte closed the third period with an 11-4 spurt to cut the deficit to 82-81 and took an 87-86 lead on two free throws by Mason with 9:45 remaining. But Jim McIlvaine dunked to give New Jersey the lead for good.
Van Horn and Wesley traded baskets before Van Horn hit a runner and dunked for a 94-89 advantage with 5:16 left. Kerry Kittles made a free throw and jumper around Coleman's foul shot and Marbury made two from the line to seal it at 99-90 with two minutes to go.
"Keith made some steals," Gill said. "Jimmy Mac played big in the middle and we got a couple of big blocks. We didn't let the big men dominate us like the previous two games."
A 3-pointer by Jones ended Charlotte's basket drought at 5:21. It was the only basket for the Hornets over the final 7:07.
Kittles scored 13 points for the Nets, who shot 48 percent (40-of-83) and made 15 steals. Van Horn grabbed 11 rebounds, Gill pulled down a season-high nine and Marbury made five steals, also a season best.
Elden Campbell had 16 points and nine boards for the Hornets, who shot 40 percent (33-of-82) and committed 17 turnovers.
The Nets trailed by as many as eight points in the opening quarter but Marbury banked in a shot from mid-court at the buzzer to cut the deficit to 30-29. Van Horn fueled a 9-0 run midway through the second quarter and New Jersey opened a 56-50 halftime lead.
