Game Story

MINNEAPOLIS (Ticker) -- The San Antonio Spurs missed having Tim Duncan in the lineup. Kevin Garnett did not.

With Duncan sidelined for the second straight game, Garnett scored 29 points, grabbed 16 rebounds and handed out six assists as the Minnesota Timberwolves held on for their fourth straight victory, 102-98, over the Spurs.

Minnesota led 83-74 entering the fourth quarter, but the Spurs cut the margin to 95-91 on a six-foot jumper by David Robinson with 2:37 left. Joe Smith answered with a follow shot for his first points of the game with 2:17 remaining.

A dunk by San Antonio's Malik Rose with 42 seconds to play sliced the deficit to 97-93. After Garnett was called for traveling, Smith came up with a key block on Robinson with 16 seconds left. Smith was fouled by Robinson and sank both free throws.

Robinson's dunk with nine seconds remaining made it 99-95. Minnesota's Malik Sealy sank 1-of-2 free throws, but Rose drained a 3-pointer with 2.8 seconds remaining to trim the margin to 100-98.

After a timeout, Timberwolves point guard Terrell Brandon was fouled and sank both free throws to seal the win.

"Flip (Minnesota coach Saunders) has been saying that we have to finish teams off better than we have been doing," Garnett said. "We seem to be letting teams back in, and we can't do that."

Brandon scored 20 points on 9-of-11 shooting for Minnesota, which never trailed and shot 53 percent (43-of-81). The Timberwolves have shot better than 50 percent in each game of their winning streak.

In Duncan's absence, Robinson picked up the scoring slack with 29 points and Avery Johnson contributed 17.

The Spurs shot 49 percent (34-of-69), but had a three-game road winning streak stopped. San Antonio maintained a one-game lead over second-place Utah in the Midwest Division, but its edge over Minnesota was cut to three games.

Duncan again was sidelined with a strained abdominal muscle.

"We've been playing with the guy for three years," Johnson said of Duncan. "We've been trying to get somewhat used to playing without (Sean) Elliott, and when you lose two important pieces out of your lineup, you have a lot to overcome. But this ballclub has a lot of heart, as we showed today."

The Timberwolves shot a blistering 74 percent (17-of-23) in the first quarter and stormed to a 36-24 lead. Brandon was 7-of-8 from the field for 14 points in the first 12 minutes and Garnett added 10 on 5-of-7 shooting.

"Minnesota had a helluva shooting night," San Antonio coach Gregg Popovich said. "We dug ourselves a little hole and it ended up being too big to get out of. I was pleased with a lot of things, but we just didn't have enough."

Brandon's 14-foot jumper with 4:15 remaining in the second quarter gave Minnesota its largest lead, 54-38. But the Spurs closed the first half on a 13-5 run as Johnson scored all six of his second-quarter points.

Garnett was 8-for-12 from the field and scored 19 points in the first half. Minnesota made 62 percent (26-of-42) of its shots in the first 24 minutes and built a 61-51 lead.

"For about the first 20 minutes, I thought we played with great flow offensively," Saunders said. "We really moved the ball well. We weren't as aggressive defensively as we really need to be, but I thought overall we did a nice job."

Minnesota rookie Wally Szczerbiak scored 10 points in the third quarter. His running jumper with 4:58 to play allowed the Timberwolves to build a 77-62 advantage.

The Spurs scored the last five points of the period to pull within nine as Terry Porter sank four free throws in the final 39 seconds.
