Game Story

MIAMI (Ticker) -- Even without Alonzo Mourning, the Miami Heat were not ready to relinquish first place in the Atlantic Division.

After a shaky beginning without their leader, the Heat used a stifling defensive effort over the final three quarters for an 85-76 victory over the rival New York Knicks.

Sidelined with a twisted left ankle, Mourning had to watch from the bench as the Knicks built a 33-17 lead after one quarter and led by as many as 20 points early in the second.

New York shot a blistering 62 percent (13-of-21) in the first quarter but made just 31 percent (18-of-59) of its shots over the final 36 minutes.

"It was just an incredible game for us," Heat coach Pat Riley said. "When we play that committed on defense, we could be very good. I haven't had this feeling about this team in a while. It was an onslaught in the beginning and we could have lost all kind of heart."

Jamal Mashburn scored 24 points to lead the Heat, who have won four straight and five of their last six to move 1 1/2 games in front of second-place New York.

Mashburn hit a jumper from the right corner as time expired in the third quarter to give the Heat their first lead, 61-60. They never trailed thereafter.

The Heat also played without starting shooting guard Voshon Lenard, who missed the game with a lower abdominal strain.

"We had the determination not to lose," Heat forward P.J. Brown said. "We have the guts not to give up. There is no doubt in my mind that this team could go all the way. I think tonight proved it more than any other night since I've been here. We seem to play the best when our backs are against the wall."

Larry Johnson scored 20 points and Allan Houston 15 for New York, which has split two games with the Heat this season.

"I thought we played great in the first quarter but the Heat turned up the defense the rest of the game," Knicks coach Jeff Van Gundy said. "I really give them a lot of credit. I don't think we lost the game as much as the Heat played well."

Knicks center Patrick Ewing could not take advantage of Mourning's absence and scored just eight points on 3-of-10 shooting in 39 minutes.

"This is the NBA and it's not like we were going up against scrubs," Ewing said. "When you're in this league, it means you could play."

One player that did take advantage without Mourning was Johnson, who made 5-of-6 shots in the first quarter, including 3-of-4 from 3-point range, to help the Knicks open a 33-17 advantage.

Baskets by Ewing and John Wallace to start the second quarter, gave the Knicks their biggest lead before Miami started its comeback.

Clarence Weatherspoon scored the final six points of a 14-2 run that pulled the Heat within 39-31 with five minutes left before halftime. They trailed 43-37 at the break.

Following their hot-shooting first quarter, the Knicks were horrendous from the floor in the second period, making just 5-of-21 attempts.

Duane Causwell started in place of Mourning and played just seven minutes, scoring two points. Miami went to a smaller lineup, with Weatherspoon getting a bulk of the time in the middle. He responded with 14 points and 12 rebounds in 37 minutes.

"We just couldn't let them break our will," said Weatherspoon, who made 7-of-11 shots.

A 3-pointer from Johnson gave the Knicks a 60-54 lead with 3:04 left in the third quarter. But Tim Hardaway nailed a 3-pointer and Mashburn scored the final four points of the period to put the Heat in front.

Wallace converted a driving layup with 10 minutes remaining to tie it before Dan Majerle answered with a 3-pointer 18 seconds later to put Miami ahead for good, 66-63.

Leading 72-68 with 4:53 to go, the Heat put the game out of reach, thanks to their bench. Weatherspoon scored four straight points and recently acquired Bruce Bowen drilled a 3-pointer, giving Miami a 79-68 cushion with 2:07 remaining.

Brown finished with 12 points and Hardaway 10 for the Heat, who shot 43 percent (33-of-76) and held a 45-40 rebounding advantage.
