Game Story

CLEVELAND (Ticker) -- Cliff Robinson buried a pivotal 19-footer with 91 seconds left and Jason Kidd sank four free throws over the final 37 seconds as the Phoenix Suns used a stifling defense down the stretch to defeat the Cleveland Cavaliers, 100-93.

Cleveland took its last lead at 93-92 on a free throw by Danny Ferry with 2:35 to go. Robinson drew a foul from Shawn Kemp and made a free throw to knot the contest. On Robinson's second attempt, Ferry was whistled for a loose-ball foul and Rodney Rogers made a free throw to give the Suns the lead for good.

Rookie Andre Miller missed a short jumper and Ferry a 3-pointer. Kidd ran down the rebound and found Robinson for a jumper from the left wing that pushed the lead to 96-93. Kidd then sealed the victory with four free throws as Cleveland went scoreless over the final 2:35.

"We got stops when we had to have them," Kidd said. "We played spotty this whole trip and that is why we let them in the ballgame."

"We let them come back in the game and you have got to give them credit," Suns forward Tom Gugliotta said. "We had a couple of big stops on defense and we got a little lucky."

Penny Hardaway scored 22 points and Kidd finished with 21, nine rebounds and six assists. Rogers had 16 points and seven rebounds for the Suns, who split four games on their road trip.

"It was not a great game for us but when you are on the last game of a road trip, all you think about is winning," Suns coach Scott Skiles said. "I found in parts of the game we played well."

Lamond Murray scored 18 points and Miller added 16 and 12 assists for the Cavaliers, who fell to 18-11 at home.

"We fought our way back into the game but just couldn't finish," Miller concluded.

"They made some plays while we were searching for something to happen," Kemp said. "We had some good moments but we have to challenge ourselves more."

Phoenix scored 11 of the first 13 points of the contest as Kidd and Gugliotta had four points apiece. The Cavaliers fought back and trailed just 29-26 at the end of a quarter.

The lead seesawed for most of the second quarter and the game was tied, 46-46, with 1:51 to go in the half. But Phoenix closed the quarter with an 8-2 burst, punctuated by Rogers' 3-pointer just before the buzzer.

Longley opened the second half with a dunk and Hardaway had a three-point play to push the lead to 59-48. The lead remained 11 entering the fourth quarter and was 13 just 20 seconds into the final period on a pair of free throws by rookie Shawn Marion.

The Cavaliers slowly began chipping away at the lead, holding Phoenix to just four points over a 7 1/2-minute span. Cleveland got within 92-91 on a layup by Kemp with 3:37 to go and took its only lead of the quarter 76 seconds later when Ferry sank a pair from the line.

Cleveland shot 42 percent (33-of-79) from the field and committed 18 turnovers.

"They pose a lot of matchup problems and we had our work cut out for us," Ferry said. "It's very frustrating. We just are not playing focused and we have to capitalize on our opportunities."
