Game Story

SAN ANTONIO (Ticker) -- One night after watching the New York Knicks run out of steam, the undermanned Miami Heat got starched by the San Antonio Spurs.

David Robinson scored 19 points and Terry Porter added 15 in 23 minutes off the bench as the San Antonio Spurs -- minus Tim Duncan -- handed the Miami Heat their worst loss of the season, 93-69.

The Heat, who rallied for an 85-76 victory over the tired Knicks on Monday, were out of it early tonight, registering a season low in points. Their previous low was 74 in a win over Utah on December 22 and their worst loss was a 106-89 setback to Charlotte on December 18.

The Heat shot just 30 percent (24-of-81), including 1-of-10 3-pointers. They also did not do much on the defensive end, allowing the Spurs to sink 7-of-15 3-pointers and forcing just six turnovers.

"We really couldn't do anything for any sustained period of time tonight," Heat coach Pat Riley said. "It was just one of those nights where you shooters are just not making their shots. Our offense was abysmal tonight, which left us with no answers."

"Our defense is key for us," Robinson said. "They were missing (Alonzo) Mourning and that made it tough for them. ... Everything starts from defense."

P.J. Brown had 16 points and 10 rebounds for Miami, which again was without All-Star center Mourning and reserve guard Voshon Lenard. The Heat saw their lead over the Knicks in the Atlantic Division shaved to one game and lost for the eighth time in 11 road contests.

"I really don't know what happened tonight," Heat guard Dan Majerle said. "Every team has nights like this one and unfortunately it happened to us tonight. I thought I had some good looks at times tonight but I only took three shots. It was just one of those nights where you have to go home and forget about it."

"They were coming off a tough, high-energy game last night," Robinson added. "We tried to take advantage of that. We had been home, so we had an extra day's rest. That was good for us."

San Antonio led 5-4 just 4:35 into the contest when it reeled off eight straight points to seize control. Robinson started the burst with a dunk and Samaki Walker capped it with a basket with 5:07 to go.

The deficit was 12 entering the second quarter but Miami rallied within 32-30 with 4:42 left in the half. Any chance the Heat had of drawing closer evaporated when Robinson hit a free throw to trigger a 7-0 run that he capped with a free throw with 2:29 remaining.

The Spurs led 45-32 at halftime and turned the second half into garbage time.

"We were right there with them in the first half," Heat point guard Tim Hardaway said. "We were not shooting well but we were staying in the game with our effort alone. In the end we just didn't do it tonight."

"We ran great," Spurs guard Avery Johnson said. "We were aggressive. We used a lot of energy. We seemed to have more energy tonight. The energy was there. I know when it is not there."

San Antonio, which has won eight of its last nine home games, was victorious tonight despite getting just eight points and five rebounds from their starting forward tandem of Jerome Kersey and Malik Rose.
