Game Story

DENVER (Ticker) -- Every now and then, the Denver Nuggets revert to form.

Despite a surprising start in which they won 25 of 55 games, Denver came up woefully flat and allowed the New Jersey Nets roll to a 94-81 victory.

Keith Van Horn had 25 points and 11 rebounds and Stephon Marbury scored 20 points for the Nets, who have split the opening two games of their five-game road trip.

"I was aggressive going to the hoop," Van Horn said. "I'm trying to go right at people and not finesse them. We did a good job figuring ways to attack them."

"We played like we wanted to win the game," Marbury said. "This team has a lot of talented players. We just came to play and played hard."

The win was just the Nets' fourth in 27 games in Denver since both teams came over from the defunct ABA but three of those victories have come in the last five years.

Antonio McDyess and George McCloud scored 22 points apiece for Denver, which is seven games behind Sacramento for the final playoff berth in the Western Conference. The Nuggets have not made the playoffs since 1995.

"We were off," Nuggets coach Dan Issel said. "You name it, we did it wrong. We had no energy. We couldn't shoot, we couldn't defend, we didn't rebound, we lost every loose ball. We were awful.

"The sad part is they were awful too in the first quarter. But they got better and we didn't. This was the most disappointing loss of the year because it meant so much and we played so poorly."

"We are all disappointed in our effort," McCloud said. "It's unacceptable. We have to get back on the right track and come out with a good effort on Friday."

The Nuggets were shorthanded, playing without center Keon Clark, who missed the game for personal reasons. Denver then lost rookie forward James Posey to a bruised right leg seven minutes into the contest and guard Bryant Stith to a right thigh bruise five minutes later.

A sloppy first quarter saw the Nets seize a 24-21 lead. The Nuggets forged ahead 25-24 just under two minutes into second quarter but a 22-footer by Scott Burrell with 9:28 left in the half triggered an 9-0 burst for New Jersey. Burrell had the first five points in the spurt which was capped by a jumper by Jamie Feick with 6:56 to go.

The Nuggets chipped away and were within 35-31 with 5:45 left in the half when a second 9-0 burst put away the game. Johnny Newman buried a long 3-pointer and Marbury had a layup before Van Horn punctuated the run with baskets 70 seconds apart.

The margin was 50-35 at the half and the Nuggets never shaved the deficit to single digits over the final 24 minutes. Denver shot just 33 percent (31-of-93) from the field and 14-of-23 from the line.

The Nets won despite making just 3-of-17 3-pointers and improved to 21-19 since a 2-15 start.

"We are growing week by week and I like where we are going," Nets coach Don Casey said.
