Game Story

MIAMI (Ticker) -- With the Miami Heat missing two of their top scorers, Jamal Mashburn and Tim Hardaway picked up the slack.

Mashburn scored 29 points and Hardaway added 18 as Miami posted its first victory over the Seattle SuperSonics in over six years, 101-83.

Playing without leading scorer Alonzo Mourning and reserve guard Voshon Lenard, the Heat shot 58 percent (41-of-70) in posting their first win over Seattle since a 115-112 victory on February 17, 1994, a span of nine games. Overall, Miami is 4-20 all-time against the SuperSonics and never has won in Seattle.

Rebounding from a 93-69 loss at San Antonio on Tuesday, the Heat extended their home winning streak to 10 games and remained one game ahead of the New York Knicks in the Atlantic Division.

"We're doing the things we need to do at home," said Miami forward Clarence Weatherspoon, who scored 13 points. "We have finally established a home-court advantage."

Mourning, who averages 22.5 points, missed his third straight game with a sore left ankle. Lenard, who averages 11.9 points, was placed on the injured list before the game with a lower abdominal strain.

Ruben Patterson, Vin Baker and Gary Payton combined to score 67 of Seattle's points. Patterson scored 24 points, Baker added 23 and Payton 20 on 8-of-23 shooting.

The SuperSonics shot under 37 percent (31-of-84) and suffered their third loss in four games.

"If we don't play defense, we can't beat anybody," said Payton, who made just 8-of-23 shots. "We put ourselves into too big a hole and we couldn't come back. We'll keep losing until we realize that we have to play defense."

Miami used a 19-2 run over a 6:13 span of the first quarter to open a 27-10 advantage. Mashburn scored 10 points in the quarter, including an 18-foot jumper with 1:40 left to give the Heat their 17-point cushion.

"We got off to a good start, the best start we have had the last two games and we were able to maintain it throughout the game," Miami coach Pat Riley said.

Weatherspoon went 4-for-4 from the field in the first quarter and the Heat shot 65 percent (13-of-20) overall in the first 12 minutes to jump out to a 31-13 advantage.

"We didn't do a good job on getting back on defense," Seattle coach Paul Westphal said. "They were hitting everything and our defense is to blame for that. They did what they had to do and pretty much beat us in every phase of the game."

The Heat extended their lead to 39-16 early in the second quarter on a layup by Mashburn with 9:16 remaining, but Seattle responded with an 8-0 run. Rashard Lewis and Brent Barry drained consecutive 3-pointers and Baker, who had eight points in the period, capped the run with an 18-footer with 8:09 to play.

Patterson's 3-pointer from the left sideline with one-tenth of a second left cut Miami's lead to 51-41.

Miami grabbed a 68-51 lead in the third quarter on a basket by P.J. Brown with 4:44 to play, but Payton scored eight points, including two three-point plays, in a 15-6 run as Seattle moved within 74-66 entering the fourth quarter.

A tip-in by Baker cut Miami's lead to 93-83 with 2:26 left, but the Heat answered with an 8-0 run to put away the game. Mashburn sank a 3-pointer to start the run and Hardaway sealed the victory on a 25-footer with 49 seconds to play.

"Until we learn how to play defense, we're going to keep getting beat," Seattle forward Horace Grant said. "Every guy on this team has to look in the mirror about the way they play defense. The first half was an F, the third quarter was maybe a D-plus and the fourth a definite F."

Brown scored 14 points and Mark Strickland added a season-high 13 off the bench for Miami.
