Game Story

ORLANDO, Florida (Ticker) -- Ron Mercer paced a balanced attack with 19 points, leading the Orlando Magic to a 104-96 victory over the Charlotte Hornets.

Mercer, coming off a 27-point performance in a win over Seattle on Tuesday, scored nine points during the third quarter, helping the Magic grab a 78-70 lead entering the final period.

Reserves Chucky Atkins and Pat Garrity scored 14 and 13 points, respectively, to spark Orlando's bench, which outscored its Charlotte counterparts, 51-25.

Atkins scored nine points in the fourth quarter. Garrity hit his only 3-point attempt and has connected on 9-of-16 from behind the arc in his last three games.

Atkins' 3-pointer gave the Magic their largest lead at 89-76 with 9:17 remaining. Charlotte drew within 99-94 on a 19-footer by David Wesley with 2:21 to play. But Michael Doleac responded with an 18-footer and made 1-of-2 free throws, giving the Magic a 101-94 cushion with 1:12 left.

Orlando has won eight of its last 10 at home to improve to 15-13 at TD Waterhouse Arena and 24-14 when scoring 100 or more points. The Magic drew within one game of slumping Milwaukee for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.

"We are just going game by game," said Magic coach Doc Rivers. "We talk about it because we want to get there but we have to care of the individual games. I think our team works a lot better that way."

"It was a win we needed, especially playing at home," Mercer said. "Our second unit played well and finished it up down the stretch. It was great."

Center Elden Campbell battled foul trouble throughout and scored 22 points in 24 minutes for Charlotte, which fell to 9-19 on the road. Hornets forward Derrick Coleman, still recovering from a sprained right ankle, missed his third straight game.

"I knew it was going to be a tough game because (Orlando) plays with such intensity," Hornets coach Paul Silas said. "We have to come with all cylinders and we were just not there tonight -- too many layups and too many second shots. When we were making our run, they always seemed to come up with a big 3. It was a tough game."

Dale Ellis, starting in place of Coleman, scored nine points in the first quarter as Charlotte opened a 29-24 lead. The 16-year veteran was 3-of-3 from behind the arc in the period but went scoreless the rest of the way.

The Magic hit 12-of-19 shots in the second quarter, turning a nine-point deficit in a 53-50 halftime lead. Orlando shot 55 percent (22-of-40) in the half.

Darrell Armstrong scored 13 points and Bo Outlaw had nine and 10 rebounds for the Magic, who shot 50 percent (39-of-78) from the floor, including 5-of-8 from 3-point range, and made 21-of-27 free throws.

Outlaw's three steals gave him 222 for his career, tying him with Anthony Bowie for ninth place on the team's all-time list.

Wesley and Eddie Jones scored 17 points apiece and Anthony Mason grabbed 13 rebounds for Charlotte, which shot 46 percent (39-of-84) and was outrebounded, 45-36.

"Orlando just hustles," Wesley said. "They dig deep and they play. There may not be a bunch of name guys over there but you know what they do."
