Game Story

PHOENIX (Ticker) -- The Phoenix Suns do not defend their home court the way the Indiana Pacers do, but they are not exactly slouches at America West Arena, either.

Cliff Robinson scored 22 points and Jason Kidd matched a season high with 15 assists as the red-hot Suns snapped the Pacers' five-game winning streak in convincing style, cruising to their ninth straight home victory, 118-87.

Robinson was 9-of-14 from the floor. He scored nine points in the opening 12 minutes, when the Suns raced to a 27-16 lead.

"It was a good win for us," Robinson said. "I think we've had some good wins this year, and that was just another quality win for us, putting us in the direction that we want to be in. We went on the road, we split on our trip and we wanted to come back and establish some wins here on our home court."

Phoenix never looked back, handing the Eastern Conference leaders their worst loss of the season while posting their 10th win in 11 games overall.

The Suns' nine-game home winning streak is their longest since a team-record 25-game run from March 19-December 26, 1994 that spanned two seasons. Indiana boasts the best home mark in the NBA at 26-2 and has reeled off a team-record 23 straight wins at Conseco Fieldhouse.

"Our starters played really bad," Indiana coach Larry Bird said. "We didn't defend, we didn't get back on my chart, we were down 29-0 on fast-break points, which means we didn't get back. We just didn't play. It's disappointing because I thought we would come in here tonight and play well because we haven't played that well on the road."

Pacers starting center Rik Smits finished with two points on 1-of-7 shooting and three rebounds in 16 minutes.

"They kept making runs there in the first half and we couldn't get over the top," Smits said. "In the second half, we dug such a deep hole there in the third quarter and they did such a tremendous job not letting us get anything going."

Travis Best matched a season high with 20 points off the bench and Jalen Rose added 19 for the Pacers, who may have been caught looking ahead to Friday's matchup with the league-leading Los Angeles Lakers at the Staples Center.

"Anytime you allow a team to shoot 50 percent from the floor, especially a team with a lot of skilled offensive players like Phoenix, you're asking for trouble, especially on their home floor," Rose said.

Tom Gugliotta scored 19 points and Randy Livingston added a career-high 16 off the bench for the Suns, who improved to 13-0 at home against Eastern Conference opponents.

Anfernee Hardaway scored 15 points and rookie Shawn Marion had 14 for Phoenix, which improved to 24-5 overall at home and has not lost here since a 105-83 setback to Portland on January 14.

The Suns shot 50.5 percent (47-of-93), held a 49-43 advantage on the boards and scored 22 points off turnovers while yielding only five. Phoenix held a whopping 46-18 advantage in points in the paint and outscored the Pacers on the break by a stunning 21-0 margin.

"That was a very good all-around game," Phoenix coach Scott Skiles said. "Defensively, we were very sharp. We were active and helping each other. I thought we did a very good job on their main guys. We pushed the ball, got out on the break, made some very nice plays and our execution was good, too. Overall, it was one of our better games."

Kidd finished with eight points and nine rebounds. Gugliotta opened the scoring with a jumper and made a free throw to make it 10-2 with 8:29 left in the first quarter.

"It was probably one of our best games overall, offensively and defensively," Kidd said. "That's always a goal at home. We're playing well at home. We've got to continue to keep that confidence and keep going."

Robinson had five points during the spurt and also made a six-footer and a layup as Phoenix opened a 27-14 cushion with 2:10 left in the period.
