Game Story

CHARLOTTE, North Carolina (Ticker) -- John Stockton scored 22 points and made a handful of clutch plays down the stretch as the Utah Jazz notched their eighth win in nine games with an 89-87 victory over the Charlotte Hornets.

Stockton scored eight points in the fourth quarter, when the Jazz erased a six-point deficit. In the final two minutes, he had a jumper, drew an offensive foul, fed Jeff Hornacek for a 3-pointer and made two free throws.

Stockton made 9-of-13 shots as he fell one point shy of his season high. The all-time assists leader added seven more to his total and picked up the slack for Karl Malone, who made just 7-of-17 shots.

Malone had 19 points and 13 rebounds for the Jazz, who improved to 9-5 all-time in Charlotte and 2-0 on their three-game road trip, which ends Sunday in New York.

Eddie Jones scored 31 points, including Charlotte's last 13. But he was called for an offensive foul on an inbounds play with 7.7 seconds left and the Hornets trailing by two.

"We're learning how to win games," Jones said. "We had some turnovers that hurt us. I think teams are made down the stretch."

Charlotte was without injured power forward Derrick Coleman for the fourth straight game and has lost four of its last five at home, where its is 22-8.

"This was one of our most difficult losses," Hornets coach Paul Silas said. "We've had other difficult losses, but this one ranks right up there. This is one of the best teams in the league and we played them tooth and nail."

A jumper by Stockton tied it for the 20th and final time at 82-82 with 1:51 remaining. On Utah's next possession, Malone made two free throws for an 84-82 lead with 1:22 left.

Stockton drew a charge from David Wesley, then found Hornacek for a 3-pointer from the right wing after a pick-and-roll was defended well by Charlotte.

"Sometimes you execute well and don't make the shot," Stockton said. "Tonight we had a play where we didn't execute well and still made the shot."

"We ran the pick-and-roll and John made a good decision late in the game," Jazz coach Jerry Sloan said. "He has always had a knack for making plays in the stretch."

Hornacek's shot gave the Jazz an 87-82 lead with 51 seconds to go but Jones answered with a 3-pointer 18 seconds later. When Malone missed a jumper, the Hornets had a chance to tie. But Bryon Russell drew a charge from Jones on the motion before the inbounds pass.

"The play at the end just happened," Russell said. "I played defense and that's what I do. I thought it was a great call."

"I heard the whistle and turned around and saw Bryon on the ground," Stockton said. "With seven seconds anything can happen."

Stockton was fouled with 5.5 seconds left and made both shots to seal the win. Jones dunked at the buzzer and was the only Charlotte player to score over the final four minutes.

"At the end of the ballgame, we had the ball in our best guy's hands," Silas said. "I liked our chances but it just didn't go our way."

Hornacek and Russell scored 13 points apiece for the Jazz, who shot 45 percent (37-of-82) from the field and held a 43-39 edge in rebounds. Center Olden Polynice blocked seven shots.

Rookie Baron Davis scored 13 points and Elden Campbell added 12 and 11 boards for the Hornets, who shot 45.5 percent (35-of-77), including 7-of-11 from behind the arc. Jones had seven assists.

Jones and Wesley scored 11 points apiece in the first half as the Hornets grabbed a 47-45 lead. Malone scored eight points in a 16-4 run that opened the third quarter and gave the Jazz a 61-51 lead with 5:32 remaining.

Charlotte rallied within 70-64 entering the final period and two 3-pointers by Davis fueled a 10-0 burst that gave the Hornets a 70-64 lead with 8:22 to go. Russell had a three-point play and a dunk in an 8-2 surge that pulled Utah into a 72-72 tie with 6:31 left.
