Game Story

PORTLAND, Oregon (Ticker) -- Steve Smith scored nine of his 19 points during a key third-quarter run as the Portland Trail Blazers overcame the absence of point guard Damon Stoudamire to defeat the Vancouver Grizzlies, 101-91.

After both teams traded baskets to open the second half, Smith ignited a 14-2 spurt with nine points, giving the Trail Blazers a 68-49 cushion at the 7:04 mark.

Stoudamire was sidelined due to a bruised left quadricep suffered in Wednesday's loss to the Los Angeles Lakers that snapped Portland's 11-game winning streak. But the Trail Blazers appeared unaffected by the absence of their point guard, using their depth and balance to pick up the slack.

Greg Anthony started in place of Stoudamire and had 11 points and six assists, making 3-of-6 from 3-point range. Bonzi Wells added 16 points off the bench.

"We missed Damon tonight," Portland coach Mike Dunleavy said. "It put a big load on Greg. Damon's penetration could have helped us some. Bonzi has to tighten up his game some but he is an explosive scorer and can get to the free-throw line. He has the ability to make big plays and break the game open."

Vancouver trailed 89-77 with 5:31 left when Shareef Abdur-Rahim scored seven of his team's next nine points, cutting the deficit to 91-86 with 3:33 remaining. But Wells hit five free throws in a 10-2 run that secured the victory, Portland's 12th in 13 games.

"I don't think we had a lack of intensity tonight, I just think Vancouver played well," Smith said. "We didn't expect it to be this close but we missed some shots and they converted some plays but we held on."

"Coming into the game, they were a team that worried me," Dunleavy said. "They have been playing real well and some of the matchups were not what we would like."

Portland has won five straight over Vancouver and improved to 13-4 all-time against the Grizzlies. The Trail Blazers are 24-4 at the Rose Garden, where they have won 17 of their last 18 games.

"Portland made the big shots and got the rebounds," Grizzlies coach Lionel Hollins said. "I was proud of our guys, the way they battled hard. I knew Portland would battle, too. Their depth showed -- they're a very good ballclub."

Mike Bibby had 25 points and 14 assists for the Grizzlies (18-40), who failed for a third time in their bid to equal the franchise mark for wins in a season. Bibby scored only five points in the second half as Portland made defensive adjustments.

"I though Bibby played an exceptional game," Dunleavy said. "He gave us a lot of trouble. We played him a little soft in the first half but we tightened that up well."

Portland shot 59 percent (16-of-27) in the first quarter and jumped out to a 35-25 lead. Bibby scored 11 points in the second quarter as the Grizzlies closed to 52-45 at halftime.

Rasheed Wallace collected 16 points and nine rebounds and Scottie Pippen had 13, seven and seven assists for the Trail Blazers, who shot 51 percent (39-of-77) and held a 47-29 rebounding advantage. Smith grabbed eight boards.

Abdur-Rahim had 21 points and nine rebounds and Othella Harrington scored 16 points for Vancouver, which shot 47 percent (33-of-71) and surrendered 25 points off 18 turnovers.

"We did a good job of getting back into the game but there are no moral victories," Abdur-Rahim said. "They're so deep. They have guys who would be stars on other teams."
