Game Story

ATLANTA (Ticker) -- Gary Payton scored 28 points and keyed a crucial third-quarter run as the Seattle SuperSonics gained a measure of revenge with a 93-81 victory over the Atlanta Hawks.

Payton added eight rebounds and five assists. The All-Star scored 12 points in the third quarter, helping Seattle to a 14-point lead entering the final period. The SuperSonics, who led by as many as 22 in the fourth, avenged a 95-87 home loss to Atlanta on February 25.

The Hawks continued the backcourt shakeup unveiled in Friday's win over New York but with much different results. Former starters Isaiah Rider and Bimbo Coles came off the bench for the second straight game but were non-factors.

Rider scored a season-low two points in 17 lifeless minutes behind Jimmy Jackson, who scored only 11. Rookie Jason Terry scored nine points and was severely overmatched against Payton.

"We did all right, we just played," Payton said. "It was a desperation game. We got back in transition defensively and we rebounded the ball well. Every time you see a team that played last night and we didn't (play), we know we have to go out there and play hard and that's what we did."

"I felt like we were a little flat and a little tired," Hawks coach Len Wilkens said. "Back-to-back games aren't the easiest to play. It's team defense that wins in the NBA. It comes with experience and working hard in practice."

Seattle, which snapped a two-game skid, evened its record at 2-2 on a five-game road trip which concludes Sunday at Minnesota.

"We were coming off two straight losses, so we really needed this game," Seattle forward Rashard Lewis said. "The last two games we lost because we weren't playing any defense. So coach stressed defense and we came out knowing we had to play `D' tonight."

The Sonics got off to a slow start, shooting only 36 percent (9-of-25) from the field in the first quarter and fell behind, 21-18. But Seattle recovered in the second period, scoring the first seven points and closing with a 20-4 run to lead 49-38 at halftime.

The Hawks hit only one basket in the final 5:05 of the period and were outscored 31-17 in the quarter.

Terry cut the deficit to 53-48 with 10-footer at the 8:18 mark of the third quarter, but Payton's 3-point play ignited a 13-2 run which pushed the lead to 66-50 with 3:03 remaining. Payton had nine points in the run and 12 points in the period as the Sonics took a 70-56 advantage into the fourth quarter.

Seattle took its largest lead at 86-64 on Greg Foster's basket with 5:33 to play and led 90-68 a minute later. The Hawks scored 13 of the last 16 points to make the final score closer than the action indicated.

Vin Baker scored 16 points and Foster, Lewis and Brent Barry had 10 apiece for Seattle, which shot 46 percent (39-of-84) and committed only 10 turnovers.

"We knew we needed this game tonight," Baker said. "It would have been a horrible trip if we lost this game. We came out tonight and really concentrated on our defense. Our defense was the key to us getting the lead."

Coles and Alan Henderson each scored 11 points for the Hawks, who shot 42 percent (34-of-82) and hit only 10-of-19 free throws.

"There is nothing we can do about this game, we just have to move on," Atlanta center Dikembe Mutombo said. "Payton came out and hit shots. We thought he was going to drive but he was hitting shots behind screens and caught us by surprise."
