Game Story

HOUSTON (Ticker) -- Kelvin Cato scored all 11 of his points in the fourth quarter and overtime and Cuttino Mobley added four of his 14 in a 7-0 run that closed the game and gave the Houston Rockets a 99-92 overtime victory over the New Jersey Nets.

New Jersey's Stephon Marbury, who scored 35 points, tied the game at 92 on a layup with 1:23 left in overtime. But Cato and Mobley combined to score the final seven points in the extra session as Houston won its third straight game.

Cato completed a three-point play with 1:03 to go, giving the Rockets a 95-92 lead. After New Jersey's Kerry Kittles missed a jumper, rookie Evan Eschmeyer fouled Mobley, who sank two free throws with 34 seconds to play.

Marbury's driving layup was stripped by rookie Steve Francis and Scott Burrell missed a long jumper with 25 seconds remaining. Mobley was fouled and made two free throws with 22 seconds left as Houston grabbed a commanding 99-92 lead.

"I thought this game was a good example of the progress that we've made late in games," said Houston coach Rudy Tomjanovich, who signed a contract extension earlier in the day.

Francis scored 15 points and Shandon Anderson added 13 for Houston, which improved to 2-3 in overtime this season.

Keith Van Horn continued his strong play with 24 points and 12 rebounds for New Jersey, which suffered its ninth straight loss at Houston, dating to December 8, 1989. More important, the Nets dropped 4 1/2 games behind Milwaukee for the final Eastern Conference playoff spot.

"This is not as setback. We didn't lose 10 games in a row," said Marbury, who went 14-of-26 from the field. "It's just one loss. We need to regroup going into San Antonio (Monday)."

The Nets led 65-64 entering the fourth quarter and held a 79-73 advantage on a layup by Kittles with 4:53 remaining. Marbury sank 1-of-2 free throws with 2:42 to play to give New Jersey an 82-77 lead.

Houston responded with a 7-0 run, which started on a 3-pointer by Anderson with 2:27 to play. Kenny Thomas sank two free throws to tie the game at 82 with 1:58 left. After a missed layup by Marbury, Cato made a layup with 1:25 to go to give the Rockets the lead.

Marbury answered with a 22-footer to tie the game with 1:01 to play, but Cato's clutch shooting continued down the stretch as his dunk with 40 seconds left allowed Houston to grab an 86-84 advantage.

"I had some opportunites to score," Cato said. "They passed me the ball and I finished."

Marbury tied the game on a runner with 15 seconds remaining. Francis shot an airball as the buzzer sounded to send the game into overtime.

"I think we made some critical mistakes in the fourth quarter," Van Horn said. "We let them get a lot of easy baskets. We were confused. It turned into a defensive game and we weren't having a good offensive game. We really missed some shots and everybody made some mistakes."

Hakeem Olajuwon and Thomas scored 12 points each for Houston, which outrebounded the Nets, 53-37, and blocked 13 shots, led by Cato with five. The Rockets shot 45 percent (40-of-88) from the field, including 5-of-12 from 3-point range, to overcome 21 turnovers.

Francis went 4-for-6 from the field and scored nine points in the first quarter as Houston moved out to a 27-18 lead.

Kittles scored 17 points for New Jersey, which shot under 39 percent (35-of-91) and was only 3-of-15 from behind the arc.
