Game Story

SEATTLE (Ticker) -- Gary Payton was not around at the end. The Seattle SuperSonics did not need him.

Without their best player for the fourth quarter, the SuperSonics had more than enough and continued their recent mastery over the Dallas Mavericks with a 101-86 victory.

Payton was ejected with 45 seconds left in the third quarter by referee Tony Brothers after picking up a second technical foul for arguing. But he did more than enough while he was in there, collecting 17 of his 19 points before halftime, when Seattle raced to a 57-38 advantage.

It was the third time Payton was ejected this season. He also was ejected against Philadelphia on December 26 and at New York on January 24.

The Sonics saw their big lead cut to six points late in the third quarter but had enough ammunition to beat the Mavericks for the third time this season and eighth straight time overall. Seattle has won 29 of the last 32 meetings between the teams.

Five days after scoring a career-high 24 points in a loss at Miami, Ruben Patterson established a new career best with 32 tonight for the Sonics, who moved one game in front of Minnesota for sixth in the Western Conference.

Michael Finley netted 25 of his 31 points in the second half for Dallas, which suffered its fifth straight loss and completed an 0-3 road trip.

One night after falling into a huge hole at Sacremento before getting back into the game only to fall short, the Mavericks did the exact thing tonight.

Dallas battled back from the 19-point halftime deficit and closed to 69-63 with 2:33 left in third quarter on a jumper from Finley, who finished 13-of-26 from the field.

Brent Barry hit a 3-pointer and Vin Baker to free throws around a technical foul shot Erick Strickland of Dallas, giving the Sonics a 74-64 advantage heading into the final 12 minutes.

The Sonics were never threatened in the fourth quarter and extended the lead to 80-66 with 10:37 remaining on a two free throws by Patterson. They led by double digits the rest of the way.

"I wasn't really worried about the start of the game," Seattle coach Paul Westphal said. "I was more worried about Dallas getting hot. But the second quarter is where we knocked them out. We relaxed in the third and they showed how explosive they are. But we had the answers."

Payton and Patterson combined to help the Sonics open their big lead in the open half. They scored 14 of the Sonics' first 18 points in the second quarter to push the lead to 43-23 with 6:16 to play before intermission.

"I was very proud of the way we fought back," said Dallas assistant coach Donn Nelson, who again ran the team for his father, who missed the game with flu. "Unfortunately we were not able to sustain it. I'm proud of the energy, especially off a back-to-back. We could've packed it in tonight."

Patterson finished 12-of-20 from the field and also pulled down eight rebounds. Payton made 9-of-17 shots while also adding nine assists and eight rebounds.

"I've just been working on my shot," Patterson said. "Tonight I just felt I was in the zone. I was hitting everything."

"There's a perception that Ruben can't shoot," added Westphal. "They were backing off him but Ruben can hit those open shots. He's worked hard on his shot."

Barry added 16 points for the Sonics, who shot 50 percent (41-of-82) while holding Dallas to 39 percent (33-of-84). Seattle also managed a 52-40 rebounding edge, despite 15 boards from the Mavs' Dennis Rodman.

Dirk Nowitzki finished with 22 points for Dallas, which committed 21 turnovers and made just 5-of-22 3-pointers.
