Game Story

ATLANTA (Ticker) -- The San Antonio Spurs could not have asked for a better opponent to rediscover their championship form.

Hot-shooting Avery Johnson scored 14 of his 18 points in the first half as the defending champion Spurs stormed to a 30-point lead at halftime and routed the reeling Atlanta Hawks, 105-79.

Johnson went 9-of-10 from the field. He was 7-of-8 in the first half as San Antonio moved out to a 63-33 lead and cruised to its second straight win after losing three of four.

Roshown McLeod scored 15 points and rookie Jason Terry added 13 and 10 rebounds for Atlanta, which suffered its seventh loss in eight games.

The Spurs stormed out to a 23-4 lead over the first 7:47. Tim Duncan scored seven points and David Robinson and Johnson added six apiece. Johnson went 3-for-3 in the surge, including a layup with 4:13 left to cap the run.

Atlanta shot 31 percent (6-of-19) in the first quarter and trailed, 30-14.

"We come out on the road and are real focused and understand that all these games are really important down the stretch," San Antonio coach Gregg Popovich said. "It was good to see everybody in that mode as we began the game."

San Antonio opened the second quarter on a 17-6 run. Antonio Daniels came off the bench to score six of his season-high 18 in the burst, including an 18-footer from the left sideline with 5:57 to play as the Spurs opened to a 47-20 advantage.

Johnson made 4-of-5 shots in the second quarter. His 16-foot jumper with 3:13 remaining allowed San Antonio to grab a 57-24 cushion.

The Spurs shot almost 57 percent (25-of-44) and scored 17 points off 11 Atlanta turnovers to take a 30-point lead at the half.

"You take a good whipping out of that game," Atlanta coach Lenny Wilkens said. "We got in a hole right from the start. They came out and played well. They looked great. They moved the ball. We were a half-step behind in everything."

Samaki Walker contributed a season-high 17 points and seven rebounds and fellow reserve Jaren Jackson added 11 for San Antonio, which outscored Atlanta's bench, 52-19.

"They came in and were aggressive," said Robinson, who had 12 points and nine rebounds. "Samaki got some good looks at the basket and did a nice job, but those guys are going to have to play a big role for us down the stretch. They need to start getting their acts in gear and tonight was a good sign that they could come in and contribute."

The Spurs shot 51 percent (43-of-84), including 5-of-13 from 3-point range, and outrebounded Atlanta, 41-35.

Jimmy Jackson scored 12 points and Dikembe Mutombo added 11 and 11 rebounds for Atlanta (23-37), which shot 43 percent (33-of-76) and fell 14 games under .500 for the first time this season.

"We just have to stay positive and keep encouraging the younger fellows," Atlanta guard Bimbo Coles said. "Just keep going out there and playing hard and get game experience for next season. Let them know that it's been a long season and they have long careers ahead. So use this as a learning experience and go out there and keep playing basketball."
