Game Story

CLEVELAND (Ticker) -- Reggie Miller scored 21 of his 28 points in the second half, including three huge free throws down the stretch, leading the Indiana Pacers to a 95-92 victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Indiana trailed 91-90 when Miller was fouled by Wesley Person while attempting a 3-pointer with 42 seconds left. A 92 percent foul shooter, Miller drained all three free throws, capping a dominant second-half performance.

After scoring only seven points in the first half, Miller finshed up 7-of-17 from the floor, including 4-of-9 from behind the arc, and made 10-of-10 free throws to lead Indiana to its fourth straight victory.

Shawn Kemp had a chance to tie the game with two free throws but the veteran forward split the pair and Mark Jackson answered with a short jump hook, putting Indiana on top, 95-92, with 8.9 seconds remaining.

"This is a very satisfying win," Pacers center Rik Smits said. "We tried to concentrate on the inside and very fortunately, we hit big shots from the outside."

Miller's ability to hit free throws down the stretch, contrasted with Kemp's failure from the line, was the key to victory for the Pacers. Indiana sank 22-of-30 from the stripe while the Cavaliers set season lows in free throws made (3) and attempted (6).

Rookie Andre Miller and Kemp misfired on 3-pointers as Cleveland lost its third straight home game. Miller, who tied a career high with 14 assists, gave Cleveland its last lead, 91-90, on a driving layup with 58 seconds to play.

"This is a tough loss to swallow," said Miller, who has stepped up his play in the absence of the injured Brevin Knight. "We have to play an entire game, stay focused and we'll come out on top most times. I was happy with how we played tonight but it's a tough loss to take."

Smits, who scored 17 points, combined with Miller to score 24 of the Pacers' 26 third-quarter points as Indiana grabbed a 72-70 lead entering the final quarter. Smits scored 11 in the period while Miller added 13.

"This is one of the most satisfying wins since I've been here," Pacers coach Larry Bird said. "We played good and guys got it together. It was a great win."

Lamond Murray scored 15 of his 25 points in the first quarter and grabbed 11 rebounds for the Cavaliers, who have dropped six straight meetings with the Pacers, including all three this season.

Murray hit 7-of-9 shots in the opening quarter as the Cavaliers forged a 33-25 lead. Cleveland extended its lead to 11 points early in the second quarter but the Pacers fought back to tie the game at 44-44 with 2:50 remaining. The Cavs scored seven of the next nine points to take a 51-46 lead into halftime.

Jackson had 14 points and nine assists and Dale Davis added 11 points and seven rebounds for Indiana, which shot 47 percent (32-of-68) and won despite allowing 30 points off 21 turnovers.

Miller finished with 17 points on 8-of-11 shooting and Danny Ferry scored all 10 of his points in the fourth quarter for the Cavs.

Cleveland tied its season high with 15 steals and matched a season low with nine turnovers but was done in at the line. The Cavaliers shot 43 percent (40-of-94) and were outrebounded, 45-41.

"I was very pleased with our effort and intensity tonight," said Cleveland coach Randy Wittman. "This is the same level of play that we had on our road trip. If we keep playing like this, we'll be fine."
