Game Story

BOSTON (Ticker) -- Kenny Anderson scored 16 points and Paul Pierce added 15 as the Boston Celtics rolled to their largest margin of victory this season, 104-74 over the hapless Chicago Bulls.

Danny Fortson had 14 points and seven rebounds off the bench and Antoine Walker added nine points and eight boards as Boston avenged two defeats to the Bulls this season, both in Chicago.

Boston, which never trailed, moved out to a 62-41 halftime lead en route to its third straight victory, all at home.

Rookie Elton Brand scored 16 points and Randy Brown added 15 as the Bulls suffered their eighth straight road loss and 10th in 11 games overall. Chicago has lost its last two games by a combined 66 points.

"To play like we did tonight is unacceptable, committing turnover after turnover, showing no poise, showing no confidence," Chicago coach Tim Floyd said. "We've really regressed in our last two games. I thought we made tremendous strides over the last couple of weeks. I don't want to see us revert back at the end of the season."

The Celtics shot 52 percent (11-of-21) in the first quarter, opening a 31-20 lead. Boston scored the first five points of the second quarter on a 3-pointer by Dana Barros and a jumper by Tony Battie with 10:29 left.

A 9-0 run capped by two free throws from Paul Pierce allowed Boston to move out to a 52-29 advantage with 4:47 to play.

"I think our confidence is a lot better right now," Anderson said. "You can tell in the way guys are playing defense with intensity and on offense. We were moving the ball a lot early in the game. That was a big key to getting out to a big lead and holding on to it."

Boston scored 18 points off 14 turnovers in the first half and grabbed a 21-point lead.

"Too many people screwing up," Brown said. "People not where they're supposed to be on the floor. They never really had a chance to trap us tonight because we were committing too many turnovers before they got into position to pressure us. We've got to give ourselves a chance to win a game."

Pierce scored the last three points in an 11-0 third-quarter run as the Celtics extended their cushion to 84-51 with 2:22 to play. The Celtics continued to take advantage of Chicago's miscues in the third quarter as they scored 10 points off six turnovers.

Boston took its largest lead on a 20-foot jumper by Barros with 6:22 left in the fourth quarter.

Chicago committed 26 turnovers which led to 32 points for Boston. Walker tied a career high with five steals as the Celtics tied a season high with 19 steals.

"We had a lot of steals tonight, but even more than that, we had some 40 deflections, which is a sign of a very active defense," Boston coach Rick Pitino said. "We've been playing better since our recent road trip. I like the way we've been playing. Everybody got to play tonight, and that's good."

Battie had nine points and 11 rebounds and Barros and Walker also scored nine points as the Celtics shot 45 percent (38-of-84), including 4-of-11 from 3-point range, and held a 50-39 rebounding edge. All 12 Boston players scored.

Fred Hoiberg scored 12 points and Chris Anstey and Corey Benjamin added 10 apiece off the bench for Chicago, which shot 38 percent (25-of-65).
