Game Story

CLEVELAND (Ticker) -- Karl Malone and the Utah Jazz played with the Cleveland Cavaliers for 24 minutes before embarrassing them after intermission.

Malone and Bryon Russell combined for 24 points in the third quarter when the Jazz outscored the Cavaliers, 36-12, en route to their season-high ninth straight win, 107-86.

Cleveland went on an 11-2 run to close the first half, taking a 45-41 lead at the break. Wesley Person opened the third period with an 18-footer to make it a six-point advantage before the Jazz raised their game to another level.

"When the third quarter started, coach said, `What's going on? Do you want to win or do you want to be a half-decent team?'" Russell said. "So we came out and played hard. Sometimes we need those ceremonial speeches."

Malone and Russell combined to score the next 13 points before Olden Polynice joined the run with a follow shot that gave Utah a 56-47 cushion with 7:24 remaining in the third quarter.

Malone followed with a 14-footer to cap the 17-0 burst before Brevin Knight hit from 18 feet to break Cleveland's dry spell.

Malone answered Mark Bryant's short hook with a 19-footer and Russell made a layup before Malone made 1-of-2 at the line to stretch the margin to 66-51 with 4:35 to go in the period.

Malone finished with 21 points and Russell added 19 and a career-best 15 rebounds for the Jazz, who have not lost since a 101-92 setback at Portland on February 27. Utah has won 16 of 18 since a season-high six-game losing streak.

"We played a lot better in the third quarter," Utah coach Jerry Sloan said. "We had two games in a row where we came out and didn't have much energy to run the floor in the first part of the ballgame. We ran the floor and defended a lot better in the third quarter and got a couple of easy baskets and got to the free-throw line."

Howard Eisley scored a career-high 23 points for the Jazz, who have reeled off six straight road wins, improving to 18-12 away from the Delta Center. Utah has won six of its last eight meetings with Cleveland.

Danny Ferry scored all 15 of his points in the first half for the Cavaliers, who have lost five in a row and slipped 5 1/2 games behind Orlando for the final Eastern Conference playoff spot.

"It's one thing to be tired for shooting bad, but it doesn't have anything to do with playing hard," Cleveland coach Randy Wittmann said. "I saw enough people that played the way we are trying to play. We've got to either go with those people or the others better see that is the way we are going to go."

Shawn Kemp scored 13 points, Bryant added 12 and rookie Andre Miller 10 for Cleveland, which shot 42 percent (33-of-79) and committed 17 turnovers. The Cavs were outscored, 29-17, at the line and 38-30 in the paint.

"We've had problems all year with the third quarter," said Kemp, who was limited to 15 minutes due to some early fouls. "Foul trouble hurt me tonight with Karl in there. You know he's going to get his points and do his work -- he's been doing that for 15 years. I got some tough breaks there early on. It's frustrating but it's one of those things."

After building a 77-57 lead entering the final period, the Jazz saw their deficit cut to 81-67 when reserve point guard Earl Boykins buried a short jumper with 9:07 to play.

Rookie Quincy Lewis made a layup, Eisley a 17-footer, Russell a layup and Eisley and Ostertag combined for three free throws, giving the Jazz a 90-67 bulge with 7:20 remaining.

Polynice had eight points and nine rebounds and Stockton added eight assists for the Jazz, who shot 47 percent (37-of-78) and held a 43-39 advantage on the boards.

Eisley knocked down a 21-footer to give the Jazz an early 18-9 lead and the rout appeared to be on when Russell followed with a 3-pointer with 2:40 left in the first quarter. But Ferry hit a 19-footer, made two free throws and was good from 26 feet to cut the deficit to 21-18 with 53 seconds left in the period.

Malone's 16-footer gave Utah a 39-34 lead with 3:38 remaining in the half before Lamond Murray and Ferry made two free throws apiece, Bobby Sura made a layup and Ferry connected from 17 feet to push Cleveland in front, 42-39, 1:25 before intermission.
