Game Story

ATLANTA (Ticker) -- Michael Finley scored 20 of his 31 points in the first quarter as the Dallas Mavericks built a lead and held on for an 89-85 victory over the Atlanta Hawks.

Finley made 11-of-21 shots and grabbed seven rebounds as the Mavericks won for the fourth time in five games since waiving controversial forward Dennis Rodman. Finley did not score in the second quarter, when Dallas took a 53-47 lead into the locker room. But he put the Mavericks ahead for good at 82-81 with a 10-footer with 6:49 left in the final period.

Dirk Nowitzki added 16 points and Steve Nash contributed 13 for Dallas, which shot 40 percent (34-of-85) from the field and won for the second time in as many meetings with the Hawks this season.

"We did some things different tonight because we were playing poorly," Nash said. "But fortunately we won, and that's a good sign. We've done that more this year than we have last year."

"It's the NBA. It's back-to-back (nights)," added Dallas coach Don Nelson. "I had a couple of guys that just didn't have any legs. Dirk's really struggled the last few games, Cedric (Ceballos) with his broken finger struggled, it's just a bunch of things; nothing that a day off won't help."

Alan Henderson had 24 points and 10 rebounds and Jimmy Jackson scored 23 points in 43 minutes off the bench against his former team for Atlanta, which has dropped eight of its last nine games.

Dikembe Mutombo grabbed 18 rebounds, helping the Hawks to a 64-45 advantage on the boards. But the Hawks shot only 35 percent (31-of-88).

"I think it was a great game," Mutombo said. "It was one of those games we should have won. I don't know why we let it slip away. We just have to find a way to start the game with a lot of intensity. I think we were one step behind tonight at the beginning of the first quarter. We let them start building their confidence and then when we tried to come back in the second half, their confidence was all up."

The Hawks closed within 53-49 when George McCloud made a pair of free throws with 10:01 left in the third quarter. But Nowitzki and Finley responded with consecutive dunks before Nowitzki had another and a 14-footer to stretch the lead to 61-49 with 7:28 left.

Atlanta chipped away at the deficit and closed to 72-69 when LaPhonso Ellis made two free throws with seven seconds left in the period. Rookie Greg Buckner made a layup five seconds later and Dallas took a 74-69 lead into the final quarter.

Rookie Jason Terry sank a 3-pointer to cap a 7-0 burst and give the Hawks an 81-80 edge with 6:49 to play. Hubert Davis followed Finley's basket with a 20-footer, giving the Mavericks an 84-81 lead with 6:09 to go.

Jackson made jumpers around a basket by Finley as the Hawks cut the deficit to 86-85 with just under four minutes to play. Both teams went cold as Atlanta missed five straight shots and Dallas was 0-for-4 before Finley sank two free throws for an 88-85 lead with 18 seconds left.

Jackson missed a 3-pointer and, after grabbing the rebound, Buckner made a free throw with 11 seconds remaining. Terry and Coles missed shots on Atlanta's final possession.

"It's tough when you get down early and fight, fight, fight and nine times out of 10 you end up short," Jackson said. "I think if we eliminate getting down 10 or 12 points early, either have the lead or hang around, we'd have a chance to win the game. When you put yourself in this situation, to have to fight back, a lot of times you come up short."
